What with this heatwave in Melbourne, it surely doesn't bode well for my birds in their aviaries, although they are mostly in the shade, it takes its toll, and i don't think they like it this warm, with 4 days in a row of plus 40, have been placing ice blocks and frozen bottles of water in their bird baths and drinking water.
Have lost one baby budgie in the nest box, sad to say.
Have been placing a frozen bottle of water in my rainbow lorikeets nest box, and this seems to cool the environment down nicely for the baby lorikeets, makes things a bit more bearable i guess.
Gladly starting tommorow we get a week or so with sub 30 temperatures, a lot more bearable and kinder on all of us.

This hot weather really is a worry especially in the breeding season. Here in south western Sydney it hasn't been as hot but Saturday was a stinker. I have 2 boxes of baby budgies just hatched and 2 baby Turquoise parrots. So far all have survived. Fingers crossed. On Saturday as I was home from work I sprinkled the aviaries with a very fine hose spray. They just loved it. I also put bowls of water in each aviary for those who like to bathe.

It helps to put wet sacking over the tops and sides of a nest box - helps to cool it down when it is hot. cheers, Mike
