Yesterday I unfortunately came home from work to discover one of my female Lutino Cockatiels dead. She has a partner and has laid eggs. My question is do they mate for life and is it worthwhile buying another female for him. I have downsized my tiels to 4 breeding pairs plus one spare male that I caught and couldn't find the owner.

Male cockatiels are pretty carefree about mates - we had a male that courted and mated with 3 females at the same time - often in the same day! And when a female died after being with her mate for around 14 years, the male withing 24 hours was chasing a spare female. Took him 12 months but she finally relented to his advances. Certainly get a female - and I would suggest placing her in with both males and seeing which she prefers. You will get better breeding results if she has had a say in the matter. cheers, Mike
