Dear Members I have got a female lorikeet and I want her too lay eggs QUESTIONS How long does it take a lorikeet to lay an egg?? Best food it give her? Does she need a male lorrikeet?? Ya that was it... Thanks Firstly why do you want your female Rainbow to lay eggs? I assume it is not currently with a male so any eggs are going to be infertile. And how do you know you have a female? A Rainbow Lorikeet hen can breed (lay eggs) at 12 months but most will wait until 24 months before potentially laying. That egg laying can occur without a male being present, but is more likely with a male. Many female Lorikeets will never lay an egg if they are being kept without a male. Rainbows lay two eggs in a clutch, and each egg takes 2 days to form from release from the ovary to laying, so the two eggs are laid 2 days apart. After the second egg the female will commence incubation - and even if there is no male and she lays her eggs she will still usually try to incubate them until finally giving up when she realizes nothing is happening. Breeding in lorikeets is mainly triggered by the seasons - most will naturally breed in the spring, although to some extent they can breed all the year round. All you can do is feed good quality lorikeet wet and dry powder mixes, give fresh fruit and lots of nectar bearing flowers such as Grevillea. Whether see lays eggs or not in the absence of a male depend show strong her hormonal urges are in the spring. Some will have a strong enough hormonal surge to lay but most will not. cheers, Mike
