Hi All,
Last time I posted, I was discussing my Princess Parrot's; Merlin, Grace, Gandalf and Blanche.
Unfortunately, a few weeks ago, I woke up and found my male Gandalf on the floor of the aviary, gasping and shuddering, with a blocked vent and paralysed legs, and a foul odour. I didn't need to weigh him to find out he was way too light, I could feel his breastbone. We got him to the vets ASAP but the most they would do was euthanize him. I have not cried so much in a long time. We buried him in our front yard under the rosemary, but I wish they would have done a smear test or bloods just so I could find out what it was!
Usually I am quick to notice changes in my birds behaviour, but as he was still a newish acquisition I just thought it was his normal shy self, I have this sinking feeling that he has been sick for a long time now.
Does anyone have any insight as to cause, and any advice to give for the next time (hopefully never) something of this sort happens? Thankfully all my other birds seem to be fine. I am wondering if it is something waterborne, or passed through the food, we have a real problem with the mice at the moment.
Cheers, Melissa
