We have had or rainbow (Swanson) lorikeet for about a month, and the bird has taken to us just fine, but he won't play with any of he toys, destructible or otherwise. He will play with a ball a little bit when we play with him, but everything else he just doesn't bother with. But he LOVES to climb. We made him a rope jungle gym to climb on and he loves it. We put some of his toys on it, but he still won't touch them unless he is using them to climb some where else. The only thing he wants to play destructively with is my cell phone case. Is this just a personal preference found in some birds, or should we be concerned?
Not sure if this is relevant: We bought him with no tail feathers. The woman at the aviary said they got pulled out by another bird. He also can't fly. We think his wings got clipped when he lost his tail feathers. We were told they should regrow when he molts.

Our computers had to be covered because our galah , Monty pulls keys off. She also would take keys from mobiles so everyone is warned not to leave there it items where she can get them. Cabling is also an attraction. Cardboard egg cartons with marbles if you play can be fun. Some toys she doesn't go to then suddenly she begins. She only likes certain seed blocks as well. Cardboard boxes are fun. She doesn't go to the base of her cage. Gum leaves and branches are worth sharing but be ready for messes. Almonds over any other nut! And anything white like mashed potatoes, porridge... As it is like the hand raising mixes when she was young.
Just play and your bird will join you. Cheers AMP

Hi, I have a lorikeet. My lorikeet is a bit picky with his toys too. However he loves anything hanging in his cage ESPECIALLY his hanging rings which has a bell. The rings are the best things we bought him as it has changed the way he plays in the cage, so if u haven't got them I highly recommend them . It took him a few weeks but once he got used to them he loved them. He loves things that hang in his cage and is not too fussed on anything else in his cage. He absolutely loves his bell which hangs alone so try that if u haven't. He has a little car and ball but is not fussed.
He also likes to be destructive and loves ripping paper. Every now and then I put and egg box in there and it occupies him while he tears it apart. I don't tls I it much as I worry about toxins affecting him.
I haven't really tried any toys that are left in the floor of his cage. I may put a ball there but he is so darn protective of his apples and is obsessed with then so I may not get a ball.
I let mine roam around inside and he just loves hiding in little pockets under pillows or under a sheet. I am actually laying on the couch now with him burrowing under a pillow on my lap . He loves to just find a secret pocket and just play with the sheet or pillow trying to make a little best or something.
Good luck and let us know. Maybe yours will take a little time but get plenty of toys he can hang off. When my boy gets in his catch he always rings his bell, gives the hanging mirror a nudge with his left foot and then goes about his business.
Good luck!!!
Geoff
