Hi All,
I have rescued a pineapple conure from the middle of the road in my local area. It has been two weeks and I have asked the three shops in the village where I live and kept an eye out on local noticeboards, gumtree, facebook, observer ect. for lost notices and have not heard anything.
I have raised and hand trained cockatiels since I was a child but all of them were bred in my aviary and handraised as babies.
I would love to try and tame this conure but am hesitant to approach the same as the cockatiels as it is a bit older and has a very different personality (more timid maybe or just not interested in bonding - my cockatiels are super friendly & just about bombproof).
At the moment I am using a sort of reward system/routine, every time I go to work and get home, put my hand in the cage to give flowers, change feed ect. he/she gets a treat in the food bowl. It has worked to a degree however, the bird has realised that when I have a hand in the cage, it can sneak out under my arm - this results in a stressful situation where I have to catch the bird (usually using a sheet) and put it back in the cage (treats follow). The bird does not bite but also will not let me touch it at all or get near it when it is out, I feel if it had at least some hand training it will make the whole process less traumatising.
So far I thought I may have 3 options:
1/ Cut wings and spend time with bird allowing it no other options - forced bonding
2/ I am considering purchasing an already hand tame conure... hope to lead by example (but in my experience, will likely work the other way)
3/ Continue trying use rewards to desensitise it to human contact (which it is becoming rapidly bored of)
How do I go about training this sweet little bird? Its very smart, observant, shy-ish and cunning so far and I spend every afternoon sitting next to it reading and talking to it trying to bond (its currently watching me as I type this).
Sorry about the long post
Thank you
Anna
