Hi guys, new member here. I wish to get some advice from all the Major Mitchell owners out there. Firstly I have had experience with lots of budgies, cockateils and various species of lorikeets over the years but am now looking into possibly getting a hand reared male baby major mitchells cockatoo. I am very confused though as everything I seem to be reading on the net is conflicting..some websites say that they are a quieter species of cockatoo while other websites say that their noise level is extremely high. Some websites also state that they tend to be a 1 person bird while others say that they are great untill they reach maturity then become nippy and loose their 'tameness'.
I have wanted a major mitchells for years now and am after some advice from those that have tame ones as pets that know first hand what they are like. I want the bird as a companion pet and as a shift worker I have alot of spare time during the day to spend with it. I own my own house so moving it all the time wont be an issue but my main concern is that we live in town and I dont want to have any arguements with neighbours as we already dont get along that well. If I teach it to talk will that stop alot of the screaming behaviour and give it heaps of toys so it doesnt get bored and start any self mutilating behaviour?
Sorry about the long post. Do the people that own these cockatoos think that they can be kept in town or is it simply not possible? Would I be better off with a more quieter species like an eclectus?
Thanks in advance, Jonas.
