Hi All, We have rescued a tern after a flock was hit by a 4wd on Teewah beach. There was a lone survivor. He can't fly but is otherwise undamaged. I'm hoping it is only tendon/muscle injury as flight is so important to these birds. He holds his wings ok, just can;t take off.
Anyway, we have had him for five days, against the advice of the avian vet who suggested I killed it. I have taught him to eat, and he comes when I call to take food from my hand, and he drinks at will. He is healthy and I have no doubt he will survive. Whether he flies again or not is another matter and I will have him at the vet tomorrow to find out.
What I am wondering is how safe it is to put him in the aivary with my galah and two cockatiels. I popped him in there this morning and after an initial rather loud carry-on by the galah (go figure!) they are all settled and even the tern seems quite content in the avairy. When I fed the parrots he came loping out to get food from me: I think he is seeing them as flock. Is there short term danger in terms of bacterial infection etc? And are there other worries I have missed?
Any advice is welcome.
Cheers Tony
