We have two new members of our family - two pied cockatiels one is also pearled :-) They came home to us a few days before Christmas. They are 8 and 9 weeks old, hand-reared by my friend since 3-4 weeks of age. They are super friendly and cuddly, super curious and just a little cheeky! Their wings have always been kept clipped as per my request so they have never learned how to fly. Mainly because we have 3 kids under 11 and huge back sliding doors! I also want them to be able to explore and play outside with me and the kids (which so far they love!) I’ve already had a friend fly away when I was younger (unclipped) so I am being super cautious.
Our intentions are to keep them clipped for safety and I don’t believe they are missing out on freedom since they are companions (caged only for rest, sleep or when we go out without them) but I want them to be able to feel comfortable and safe walking around, especially since I have kids and they are often on the ground. They are able to flap up about 6 inches and they are able to glide down from up high. I thought about getting a climbing frame thing for parrots to play on when they are out of the cage but I can’t find any decent ones really. They seem to just want to be on the ground all the time. They don’t seem to like being up high unless they are on my shoulder. They just like to waddle around, usually following me haha. Or sit on my husband’s feet haha.
-is this an age thing? Will they get more confident to be up high as they get older
-any recommendations on parrot play frames (the larger the better) we are in Perth, Western Australia.
-any tips we should know about for clipped companions?
