It is illegal for anyone to sell them to you at that age. A bird must be weaned and independantly able to feed itself fully before they can be sold. The fines can be up to $15.000.00 so most people would not be prepared to take the risk. Jo-Anne

I couldn't see how, as I buy chicks from the nest every year. People sell and buy them at this age in my area QLD all the time......... Thanks for your post though....

Hi Tim and Priscilla unfortunately what Jo-Anne has posted is correct :: It is illegal to sell unweaned chicks, this law was introduced to combat many losses in the avian world,(now the loophole)However it is not illegal to raise someone elses chicks that have been passed on and not sold! so the changing of monies can be done when the chick has weaned ;D ;D If there is any differ I would like to hear it cheers Frank

hey there frank, I have never heard of this before, I handraise my own chicks and alos buy chicks from other breeders to hand raise. I have even sold chicks to several pet shops when I have to many at one stage. Is this illegal in Queensland? and if it is, why do these pet shops say nothing and risk this. The shops I have sold to are big named pet stores.... ....

Thats right Tim they would be breaking the law and there are those out there who will report law breakers! so be aware especially if advertising! Priscilla the birds you sell to pet stores must be weaned otherwise as mentioned you can be fined , you mention you haven't heard of this before but as a member of a bird club or organisation you become well informed of the laws regarding aviculture! cheers Frank

Thanks for clearing that up Frank. In fact I do know of a few people that will report those selling unweaned birds so I am more cautious. In fact seeing most of us are on Petlink as well I know of one from there too so be warned. I actually live not far from you Priscilla so the same rules apply for both of us. Regards Jo-Anne

Usually if I get someone to handraise my chicks, they are paid after they are ready to go to a good home. That's when money is exchanged....Thanks all for that well worth handy hint.....
