Hi, me again, I am after some opinions on a different species of bird to breed, I love my ringnecks but I think my neighbours patience is wearing thin ( we all know how noisy ringies can be!) so I am thinking of selling my bredding pairs and getting somthing a bit quieter, I adore handraiseing so I want a bird species suited to this, I do have budgies and cocketiels but am not pationate about them I mainly keep them for their happy sounds and pretty colours, I like the look of rosellas especially crimson rosellas, and some other natives such as red winged parrots, but am a little dubios about how they go as handreared pets, also don't know much about the lisence thing either. I'd love some ideas on slightly quieter birds, what ever I decide I will do some reseach because I want my birds to be happy in my aviaries, so I may need to ask more questions. Kim

Do these need permits to buy and sell? Are they hard to breed or any specific reguirements?

Hi Kim, Just a word of warning re Princess Parrots. These are a really nice birds and make good handraised pets......however if you're getting rid of your ringies because they're noisy.........I'd think twice about Princess's as I find them just as noisy if not more. I have one at the moment that I have to re-house to a friends because of the noise he makes !!!!
Bourke's are a nice quite bird but can be a bit flighty in my experience. I've never seen a handraised one either.
I've hand a friend hand-raise rosella's with mixed success.....sometimes they turn out really well, other's try to pierce your body any chance they get even after being hand-raised.
Your thoughts about red-wings are good and I'd even consider King Parrots. (I've seen some really nice hand-raised Kings)
If your live in Qld you need licences for both these and they are reasonably expensive compared to bourkes, princess etc.

Hi Kim, You might consider Kakariki's as well, they make very little noise as they can't screech, and make extremely tame handraised pets. I'm not sure about permits in Qld, we don't need a permit in NSW. As to price, the normal coloured birds are not expensive at all. I have 1 pair and though not HR they are very tame birds , as to feeding, breeding etc, they are not hard at all. The only problem you might have is they don't like really hot weather. Hope this helps, Cheers Tony

I can vouch for handraised kakarikis as we have one as a pet. They don't like to sit on your shoulder long but they are very friendly and love to visit everyone in the house. It is also not recommended to clip their wings.

Redrumps may also be another option. I have handraised them before and they make gorgeous pets although once again they can be a bit flighty. Jo-Anne

Hi again, Bourks sound good, and I actually was checking up on kakarikis last night but I am in north Queensland and I wonder about them up here as it is quite hot and humid, I would avoid the princesses if they might make noise, Our ringie breeders will definately have to go. Our neighbour is very touchy about noise, and I overheard them complaining yesterday so I'm expecting a visit from the council soon.

Green Cheek Conures are extremely quiet and make great pets. The only thing that might put you off is that the cocks have a reputation for killing the hens during the breeding season if the hen doesn't want to go down yet. Other than that they are great little birds.

Hi Kim, I live in Townsville and Kakarikis are readilly available in the petshops up here. They tell me they're local birds and I know of a couple of guys in the 'club' up here who have them with good success. I think the main thing is to make sure that the avairy is well ventilated, catches what breeze there is and that there's always water available to them.
They're a 'crazy' bird, remind me of rainbows a bit.........a lot of character and always 'out there' trying something out, which can be a bit of a downer when they decide to explore inside the house. It's a scream watching them walk upside down along the roof of the avairy..........seem to enjoy this more then flying !!!!

Ok Kakarikis have my attention, is there any special requirements, My aviaries are suspendeds, and under the shade of palm trees, they are quite open and fairly cool. Is there a good site I can do some research on. and how about breeding and handrearing?, are they much smaller than the ringnecks? I'm used to syringe feeding and avoid crop needles if I can, thats why ringies are so good they've got big mouths. Also what ages do they need to be pulled at for handraiseing etc, I also like the fact that ringnecks seldom need any heat source such as the brooder box up here. Lots of questions I know but hope you can help.

Cheers Tony www.birdsnways.com/birds/articles.htmgo to species related articles and then kakarikis.

As long as you are aware the kakarikis need a cooler climate you can usually make some changes to make it suitable to them, like lots of shade, watering the top of their aviary to keep it cooler etc then it should be ok. They make delightful birds in either an aviary or pet bird aspect and make full use of any aviary. Our male pet kakariki is our best talker so far. Kakarikis are like little pigs, they eat anything and everything and lots of it. Make sure you use very large water bowls as they love to bathe at least daily (even in the winter here in Melb) and they splash lots of it everywhere. There is a kakariki breeder in Brisbane Southside that also has pied kakarikis. The first link I'm giving you is from the breeder that reared our pet Kakariki (Rookie), she no longer breeds kaks but does have a reasonable website and kakariki links page.
