If you have not had any experience with birds, I would not recommend an african grey. Especially if you're only wanting one to "kill my time". They require constant companionship and have a relatively complex diet. I would recommend you seek an alternative species to purchase. I would highly recommend: budgies, cockatiels and lovebirds for the first time bird owner. African greys sell for between $4,000 - $5,500 each.

Have you thought of volunteering at the local animal shelter or zoo/wildlife park to fill in your time? It would be much cheaper!

Please let us take into consideration that zhuang's English as explained is not the best & try to take into consideration that there may be a language barrier & mis interpretation of words used by Zhuang has not explained themselves well, like killing time. Suggesting a robot parrot or stuffed one has not helped Zhuang at all & can be considered quite hurtful. Perhaps Zhuang if you could give us some more details like how long you are going to be in Australia, we may be able to steer you in the right direction. Regards Anna

"4--7 monthes" and considering how long parrots live for, i think my suggestion is quite acceptable. Animals of any kind are not something you just buy while you're somewhere for a short time!.
I could be all nice and fluffy about it but African Greys are not toys.

Rissa, We wellcome all bird owners, and prospective bird owners, both experienced and total novices here, and try to give the best advice we can, without criticism, no matter what our personal feelings may be.
Zhuang obviously has trouble expressing himself in English and has asked our advice on African Greys and we have given it, He has been advised that a parrot of this type would be a bad choice as a companion bird for him, and we can only hope he has accepted that advice. So, lets leave it at that, untill we hear from Zhuang again.

Thanks Tony for putting your comments forward I think that is a very sensible way to look at the situation. Hopefully this person will be in touch again if he is not too offended and we can help with further advice. Regards Bev PS Having had a lot to do with people who have English as a second language I know how easy it is for things to be said the wrong way!

thanks every person who encourages and gives me advice, austrilian people are very friendly and nice and highly-educated. i am wondering whether i could take parrot china i get in austrilia( austrilia aboriginal species or exotic ones like african grey)after i finish two years study. if i cannot, i would better not keep one, i think it is better for me and pets. thanks regards zhuang

Tim, I have just read your reply to zhuang re exporting birds to his home country. Do you know what difficulties and costs would be involved in me bringing a macaw or the like that I purchase in USA back to Australia. I would be interested in your comments as I am going there soon and have a son who is a permanent resident. Regards Bev
