Hi guys, I have never freighted a bird by air before and now have to send one to the Nortern Territory, so how will it cope? it leaves at 10am but has to wait for 4 hrs at Cairns Airport before being sent on and won't get where its going untill 8pm anyone have any experience? The guy at Australian Air Express says it will be fine and they freight birds all the time but I'm still worried. Kim

Hi Kim I freight Tiels a fair bit and had an order for N.Territory which i refused as there is a lot of handling probs in the main airport and birds have to hang around a long time between transfers that is from Melbourne so i wont freight N.T. I personally wouldn't recommend that legth of stay in a freight box and P.s be carefull money in the bank first before delivery as there are some shifty shonky's around cheers Frank

Thanks guys, I looked into virgin but they dont fly to where the but is going, and I will be waiting untill the money is in my account, I am sending it in a box that is a cockatoo freight box so he will have plenty of room to move around and I'll put lots of vegies and fruit in for him I'm also giveing him spark in his water for a couple of days. She did say that she was depositing payment into my account yesterday but that didn't happen so if I don't see it by tomorrow I'll email her as I do have another buyer who is local, I would rather he goes locally anyway but as I've already agreed to send him to this lady I will stick with my word, but kind of hopeing it falls through.

Be carefull with the fruit Kim. Check with NT & QLD customs first before putting any fruit or vege in the box. I know for a fact that if your bird is carrying any kind of plant material (inc sawdust) in its cage Customs/AG Dept in WA will hold it up while it is processed and it may even be refused entry. There may also be a large fee if the bird comes in outside of opperating hours.
Check the other states as to their quarantine legislation.
You can use a sponge to help keep the water from spilling all over the place and also water loss is less. Another idea is those guinea-pig water dispensers, but you have to get the bird used to using it well before it goes on its trip.

What a headache, ok I've checked on the fruit and veg, and apples corn and carrot should be ok, but I didn't know about customs, it's getting there at 8pm at night, so I will have to ring Gove airport to check that.

Hi Kim, Netbank transfers can take 2 days to appear in your account. The buyer can send you the netbank/ direct debit receipt number for easier id. sue

I got the payment today, it did go in via internet, now I just found out I need an importing prohibited species permit, madly trying to organize this, I could give up but it's a good learning experience.

Kim,
The buyer should be the one organising the permit as they are the ones taking possession of the bird in that state. In some states you also need an export permit for certain birds.
Its such a pain that all the states don't have the same legislation and laws about animal imports. It makes it difficult for us small guys. I've never imported or exported just because it was too big of a pain in the bum!

With regards to keeping water available for the bird in case of long stays ...at the last ANCS meeting we were shown a product that is used for reptiles when they are transported etc. It is like a jelly-like substance that is actually water. It is made by Aristopet and could be a good idea for freighting birds without having to worry about spillage. Maybe worthwhile having a look at! Jo-Anne
