I have had a hen sitting on four eggs for a while now she is Grey with white splashes on her body and the male is the same colour. This morning I had a look and one of the eggs has hatched, from the look of it last night, she still has three eggs in the nest so I'm ever hopeful of more babies. I was wondering if you guys could tell me what mutation the male bird is bearing in mind the hen is the same colour, here is a picture of him taken this morning. John

Thanks Bill, I'm really apprehensive at the moment as I haven't had a lot of luck with my cockatiels regarding babies loosing a few and others coming up dead in shell, so I am really treating this lot with kid gloves and have everything crossed including my eyes that these ones will survive.

Bill is correct John the one in the middle is a hen and has a young look about her!As Bill mentioned she is a Whiteface Normal split to pied If the male is the same he will have a white mask on his face and darker tones If he is split pied to pied then you can expect possibly Whitefaced Pieds similar to Blosseys' bird called Aussie! Hey Bill you did pick up the color tones on the chest which is very observant of you,I would say at this stage that it looks more like dirt from nesting and nothing to do with Cinnamon cheers Frank

Thanks everyone the male does have more white on the head, Ill try and get some pics of him when he comes out of the box. Frank is it normal for the hen to lave the box during the day and the male to sit on the eggs, she seemed to be out of the box for a long time but i do have to say he was doing a great job of looking after the eggs and baby.

He is a nice looking bird John, to think that approx 10 yrs ago a whiteface was worth between 1000 & $5000! do you know if he carries any other genetics,If he split to pied then a good indicator with the chicks is the toe nails (Clear toes will indicate Pied)or(White pin feathers on the crest will indicate pied) ;Dcheers

I'm not sure about the genetics Frank the babies are covered in white down at the moment but they are only days old so I guess ill have to wait 'till they get a bit older before I can check. I'm really treating these babies with kid gloves at the moment so it will be a case of hasten slowly with them and don't interfere more than I have to.

Hi John in actual fact I get very annoyed with myself if i haven,t checked babies top and tail at least twice a day ,i find very rarely parents abandon them for this reason, but then again they are in seperate breeding cages and have nowhere else to nest if they did.I would incourage you to more nest inspections and handling of the young chicks even if the parents shoot off in a hurry out of the box doesn't affect there return I would be more concerned from other tiels or species invading their boxes. Even as 1 day old chicks clear colored toe nails will be a good indicator for any pieds cheers Frank

The count is up to three babies as of this morning, it looks like number three was hatched last night. The first two chicks are covered in white down but dad wouldn't let me look too closely at them so I dint know what colour the toes nails are yet.

Hi John, I find the best time to check the chicks is around 5pm in the afternoon. I feed between 4 and 5 roughly and often the male is quite happy to leave the nest and the hen hasn't yet entered for the night sitting. I usually check them in the morning too when I feed them their greens and soft food. At the times that the parents are doing the changever is the best. When the new feed goes in mine are happy to have a good feed while I mess with the nest. The only time parents have abandoned the nest on me is if I have had a lice infestation and have had to spray and change bedding etc. and the nest smells and looks different to them. If everything stays the same then there is usually no reason they will leave the babies. By the way your male is a nice looking bird. He doesn't seem to have any white patches on the back of his head. It is hard to tell from the pics though. If he doesn't then all the chicks will be whiteface and some split to pied unless the male is carrying the pearl lutino or cinnamon gene which will result in some hen chciks of those colours. If a chick appears with red eyes then it will be a lutino hen or if one has very dark reddish eyes it could be cinnamon. I guess you will have to pull out the patience box and use some of that for a few weeks until they get their feathers. It is the hardest time of breeding for me. I just don't like to wait!LOL Jo-Anne

I love whatching the babies develop. It is just like christmas, not knowing what you are going to get until they get their feathers. John, I had to do a double take, wondering how your babies would go in the cold weather we are getting now....bu then I remembered you are probably a bit warmer than us. How are your little tackers going now? Any more additions?

I checked them yesterday Kazz and they were doing well I am checking them daily now. I was worried about the cold too but the parents are doing a great job sitting on them and keeping them warm and from the look of their full crops well fed too.
