I had a great surprise this morning, two new red rump chicks and they both look like they are Lutino at the moment although they havn't got their eyes open yet but the down is white which is promising. The male is an Opaline and the hen is a normal she has given me Lutino's last year but only one so all the fingers are crossed in this house hold.

Congrats John.....I have never seen a baby redrump! I did handfeed a young redrump chick once for a friend...it was a silver I think she said. Could you get some pics to share? Please Jo-Anne

This is a Lutino Red Rump from last season Josie note the feather colour is white, but it turns yellow the older the bird gets.

Well done John nothing more rewarding than a breeding program coming together. From what i have been told seems the grass parrots are becoming popular as pets also,is this because of there placid nature. cheers Frank

What a gorgeous little bird and obviously the colours work differently from the tiels I am used to! The little guy I handraised was a gorgeous bird and so friendly but seemed to be more active than the tiels...and quicker. They fly faster and their movements are more erratic than tiels which I felt made them more of a pet for experienced bird owners. Just my opinion mind you..they are still lovely regardless. Josie

For real! Placid is the last word I would use to describe any of the Psephotus.
I used to have 4 h/raised Red-rumps .. they were extremely agressive towards each other and other birds. And towards other people (ie posessive). In the end I had to sell them all because they near killed each other. I'd only recommend them as a pet if you were keeping one by itself or a male and female together.

Yep Bourkes, from the other grass parrot genus the neophemas, are very placid

You must have got some rouge birds Clair, sure they are agressive towards other birds during mating season but otherwise they are as placid as any other bird. I have 6 pair all in the same aviary and they are all breeding at the moment, yes they do squable but so does any other species. I have an Opaline male bird that will eat out of my hand and he has never been hand raised or tamed in any way. I have a pair of Bourkes in with the budgies and the male bird is forever chasing them around the floor trying to attack them, it's breeding season and he is chasing them away from the hen's nesting box.
Just a little bit of information here on Bourkes. as a result of findings from the research programs carried out jointly by the Museam of Victoria, the CSIRO and the Australian National University, the Bourkes parrot has been found to have no close relationship with the Neophema group. Consequentaly the bird has been re classified to it's own genus- Neopsephotos bourkii

There are three babies as of this morning and still two eggs left I dont think they are fertile but I may be yet proved wrong, I hope. The Blue hen is sitting on 6 eggs and she is due to hatch any day now, exciting time of the year isnt it!!

Hi Tony I was first made aware of the information in a publication by the Australian Birdkeeper called A Guide to Neophema & Psephotus Grass Parrots the revised edition. I am led to believe a full report can be obtained from the C.S.I.R.O, hopes this helps Tony .
