Good day Guys, Great forum. Been sniffing around for a while. I have a question for all the experts on Neophema's. I've had conflicting opinions on the success (or otherwise) of hand-raising red rumps. I have a daughter who is eager to give it a go however don't want to have her go through the process and then find that we have to put them back in the aviary anyway. I'd like her to 'get the bug' so to speak and don't want her disheartened. Some people have said they're fairly nippy regardless and can be difficult for the non-expert. Any advice appreciated.

Hi Viraba, I handreared heaps of different birds and i love rearing red rumps and i have always sold them quickly,i am looking forward to rearing some this season, i think you daughter should be fine with them, the only thing i have found is that i've had to keep them warm until they are fully feathered, and don't leave it too long to start rearing them. any other questions feel free to ask. *whispering* A Red-rump is a Psephotus grass parrot .. not a Neophema! Neophemas have the reputation of being placid, and Psephotus and Narethras of being pugnacious. Red-rumps were the first birds I ever reared ... no problems at all. Good luck ...

OK,OK......it'd been a rough day and I'd just moved my turqs !!! Of course red-rumps are Psephotus........can't think why I called them Neophemas Hey, thanks for the advice guys. I have to tell you that I've asked the same question on a number of different forums and you guys are the only one's that have been totally positive towards the 'rumps'. The pair that are on eggs at present are a normal cock and a cinnamon hen ( I think ??). Both young birds with their first clutch. Can anybody give me an idea of what I'm likely to end up with ?? How about you John ? I'm just new to the birds scene (or rather taken it up again after 30 years absence). The 'rumps' aren't my only birds. As I mentioned I also have a pair of red chested, yellow turq's. I also have a pair of cinnamon tiels, pair of white face tiels, pair of rainbow lorrikeets, pair of rosa bourkes, a hen grey tiel, one gouldian (cock), 2 zebra's....just presented me with 11 eggs so I'm thinking they're both females and a cock Princess Parrot. (man are they noisy !!!!) Hopefully they'll be added to with some more 'rumps' !! Thank's for your advice........and any future help you can give me. Perhaps I should have posted this in the Introduction section ?? Oh well, by the way, I'm a North Queensland connection ! Viraba

Hi Viraba because the male is normal all chicks born will be normal unless he carries a hidden trait such as Opaline all males born will be normal visually but split to Cinnamon cheers Frank

you got it Frank and all the hens will be normal. The best you could hope for is that the male is split to something, to get cinnamins you would have to breed a brother and sister.
