I have my first baby cockatiel hatched this morning or last night to a pair of very proud parents. Dad is a pied and mum is a beautifull Cinnamon she is still sitting on 5 eggs so I guess I can look forward to more babies. The baby is a bundle of white fluff at the moment, Ill try and get pictures of it in the next couple of days ;D

Congrats John. Welcome to the wonderful world of baby tiels. If your parents are not visual w/faces & you have a bundle of white fluff then your proud parents are carrying the gene for w/face split. Looking forward to some pics. Cheers for now Anna ;D

I did sneak another look this morning and there are more empty egg shells in the box I couldn't see any babies because mum was sitting tight and making threatening motions towards me ;D . John

I managed to get a look at the baby and it is covered in white down the eyes are black. So am I right in assuming it will be a white face? Ill try and get a pic next time but i don't like disturbing them Im not sure how tolerent they are of me looking in the box so ill leave them for a while.

Good going John! You seem to have had a good season? My birds all went down a few weeks ago - they are very late, but perhaps they were waiting for the warmer weather. Just hoping they are all fertile now! Claire

Well it looks like I'm only going to get one baby out of 5 eggs it has been four days now and no more eggs have hatched. I dont know, maybee because it is her first clutch, i hope thats the reason and i can look forward to next season. I have started a feeding program of sprouted seed every day, I seem to have that working well now and the birds love them, when one batch is sprouted I start on the next batch and I am feeding them to all my birds now.
I still have two hens sitting on eggs so I am still hopefull that I will get some more babies, It's been very hot here today and is going to stay that way for the rest of the week. I have propped open the lids of all the nest boxes and have put my shade cloth cover over the aviary to try and cool things down a bit for them. How long do you suggest i wait untill i remove the un hatched eggs from the nest.

Looks like the heat was too much for the baby I found it dead this morning, both mum and dad were out of the nest box so i removed all the remaining eggs, they were not fertile. Very dissapointed tonight as i was really looking forward to this little guy John

Hi John,Tiels especially chicks are very hardy when it comes to heat remebering that a parent incubates at 36 celsius so it could have been something else.I have just about pulled all my nestboxes down as the season is fast approaching closure for me and non breeders are already commencing their moult better luck next time as they will improve with experience! cheers Frank

Sorry about the baby John, you were so looking foward to him, what a shame .......I went into panic stations with my babies today with this heat, there are six chicks in each of the two boxes and they look like sardines in a can, was supprised how well they went, Frank was right about them handling the heat ok....but I was still worried all the same

Hi John, so sorry to hear that you lost your first baby tiel. I hope that your other pairs of tiels will hatch some babies for you as I know how excited you were about the first baby hatching. I'm sure that they will do better next time as they might have been a young pair. I have 3 pairs of tiels breeding & looking after babies & this has been quite a warm week in Adelaide (above 37 all week) & all babies have survived. Mind you I check on them about 5 times a day just to make sure, but as they are in separate breeding cabinets under my back verandah it is not quite as hot for them, plus I use a upright fan to get some more cool air to them. Better luck next time. Cheers for now Anna

One door closes another opens. I was doing my weekly maintenance today and there tucked away in the very last nest box was the fattest and the most healthy looking little baby you could ever want to see. It's crop was absoloutly bulging and it was covered in yellow down. I am guessing it was around two weeks old and the mother is the white face in my avitar and dad is a pied. It looks like it is going to be the only one in the clutch of 4 eggs but I'm happy, I seem to have lost a couple of babies D.I.S for some reason and I am guessing this might be the case with this clutch, pictures to follow.
