Can a hen over feed her chick? She only has the one chick, he hatched on christmas eve and sometimes when I look in she had fed him so much he can hardly lift his head. His crop is way bigger then his tummy. Is this normal? He is growing fast ( I think) This is the first time for us to have such a little fellow. When do they open thier eyes ? Therese

hi i know when you handrear a baby tiel its very easy to over feed if u dont know what u are doing u can over stretch the crop and it will stop but i have noticed some of my hens will fill babys crop to a huge extent but it never seems to effect them its odd i have always wondered what the difference is any ideas guys

I have never had a problem with parents overfeeding if anything I'm gratefull to the parents when i see huge crops that are full and sometimes protruding to the back of the neck in handrearing it does create overstretched crops but for some reason with parent fed formula it doesn't have an effect perhaps the natural feed digests quicker

Hi Theresa, No the Mum would not over feed her baby, she knows what she is doing. You must be giving them heaps of food (frozen peas and corn, wholemeal bread) I love seeing big round crops in my babies. Keep up the good work.

hi, i am under belief that no they can not! the only thing i dont get is my mother budgie had a clutch of 4 babys and their was always 1 (the same 1) that had the biggest crop! there didnt look like much difference between the birds themself! but i dunno the birds grew up fine!!
