What is considered to be an overcrowded avairy? I have a 1.8m x 4m. How many tiels would be comfortable for them? I've had psittacosis (at the tail end of treatment) and I'd like to keep them happy. ;D

Hi Jacqui if not breeding then i would suggest approx 15-20 birds in that size avairy would be the limit! but for breeding purposes during the season I wouldn't place more than 5 breeding pairs allowing for young to fledge give or take! ;)Also the placement of perches plays a part on numbers, I prefer an open enviroment with perches placed as each end of the avairy in a ladder format but as we know it's horses for courses ;D

That's what I thought in regard to the breeding pairs. I have 4 pairs ready to go again for the second time this season. I'm introducing a new pair as well in a few days. I have the ladder style perches and a shelf for the boxes, they seem to cope O.K with that. I was just concerned they were stressed, because of the disease, but it could have been taking her babies to h/r too. That surely stressed them. Do you find that it stresses the parents? Do you take them all out to h/r or just a few?

Jacqui I dont handrear but I'm sure it would lessen the stress if one or two remained in the nest for parent rearing.I also dont think that they have feelings as we do but I know if they have visual or sound contact this would prolong the stress, dont be too hard on yourself keep your aviaries clean and feed them a good nutritious diet and I,m sure you will be more confident with breeding and rearing! ;D

I handrear my birds but like Frank suggested I leave 1 or 2 in the nest as the parents just seem to be happier and seem to get on with things, they don't even seem to notice a couple have gone.
