Hi, I was just wondering if i could get some advice on putting more weight on my cockatiels, i have 2 lutino hand raised youngsters, 2 adult greys (will be breeding hopefully soon). I have just lost one of my hand raised tiels a few weeks ago (my first one poor fella) that i bought from a breeder, i took him home and found a few weeks later he had coccidiosis, by that time it was too late for me to do anything, i would be most upset if i lost my lutinos, anyone with any hints, tips and advice, please do not hold back, i will take in all i can got. thankyou.

Coccidia is a microscopic parasite that can occur in Tiels intestines but not very common.... I am surprised you have a loss with this disease! my guess it being a young bird you lost is possibly to Psitticossis, however coccidia is spread thru bird droppings and wet humid and high temperatures are the number one conditions to accomodate it. I'd be confident in saying the bird already had the disease prior to your purchase and i would confront the breeder! Watery droppings with detection of blood is a good indicator of coccidia and i think you should consult your avian vet for approriate antibiotics for the rest of your flock before it's too late Frank

As Frank has advised get some avian vet assistance for the rest of the flock. As far as getting them to gain weight is concerned, try sprouted seed it works for me sprinkle the sprouts with a good Vitamin supplement also a slice of 9 grain bread every day will help things along as bit. You could also increase the amunt of Sunflower seed that you feed them. All of thses things should increase the weight of the birds, but first thig to do is get some advice from a vet for the rest of your birds.

I wpuld also worm the other birds. Psitticssis and coccidia may be the cause of the weight loss. I would get the droppings of the other birds tested by a vet to see if that is the cause of the weight loss.
