Gday..again ;D
I have another lil query in regards to my boy, umm when we got him he was about 8weeks old and not very healthy (brought from a pet shop) i noticed he was sneeezing alot and his nostrils were red... my avian vet checked him out and he had a resptirory tract infection, and giardia, antibiotics were given for the giardia which attacks the immune system.. but nothing was given for the tract infection, time went by and he was getting healtheir and stronger, but ive always noticed his nostrils are still red..his still sneezing but not as much as before, he also does this yawn like thing for about 5-10mins, its like his dry-reaching, then shakes his head...then keeps on yawning/dry reaching... I will visit my vet but just wanted to see if anyone could give me any information or any ideas as to why his nostrils are still red and what that yawning thing is..
thannnks

Hi Emz, sound to me like your tiel could be suffering from a sinus infection or some other infection. Red nostrils & continually sneezing & yawning is a good indication of sinus infection. I would advise taking him back to your avain vet to get him checked out again as the poor little bugger is suffering. Hope this helps. Chers Anna

Hi Emz, about the only thing I have heard that might help with any problems like this could be Silver Colliad, which is a natural ant-biotic & I have read some good reports on Echinacea & also Grapefruit Seed extract. i also use a pro-biotic when tiels have been sick & on medication as this will put healthy flora back into their system. I think if your tiel has been sick with it for a while though & sounds quite distressed that I would be more inclined to get him to the vet rather than mucking about with natural alternatives. I have found that when a baby bird is sick right from the start, they do tend to be like that for quite a while. I have some poorly ones of my own that survived a virus but they are not the healthiest tiels I have ever had but they do eat really well & are bright eyed & bushytailed, yet don't weigh very much. You could also try giving your tiel a more sprouted seed diet as this will provide heaps more available vitamins & minerals & you could also try a mineral supplement on his food. Hope this helps but my first advise is getting him to a vet, to see if he can clear up the problem as he could also have a respirtory tract infection as well. Cheers Anna

Hi Emz, good idea taking it to the vet. we have an ecellent recipe here on the forum, just look under the section Feeding & there is a heading sprouts, that will give you a clue to what to use. Some people do use large parrot mix, but watch out for the smaller seeds as they sprout a lot more quicker & go moldy very quickly. Try a cup at a time to sprout. He might not eat them to start with, but try feeding the sprouts on your hand first & see how that goes, & don't leave them too long in his cage as they will go off & make your tiel sick as well. Hope this helps. Cheers Anna

You could also get some Sulfa 3 and follow the directions on the container treating your bird for 5 to 7 days I have used it and found it works pretty well.

Hi Anna I got it from my bird supply place and it is a form of anti biotic. You add it to the birds water it is recommended for the treatment of bacterial enteritis and respiratory disease, It comes in 125 ml bottles and it is a bit pricey but it's good.

umm i have 2 cents to add..
the "yawning" emz is mentioning sounds like what monty does sometimes, it's like dry retching as she says...when food is not sitting quite right in their crop.. i don't think (just from reading this) that the bird is yawning tired...
also monty sneezes quite often.. so either he's sick as well..or it means they're both fine

Hi Jo, a tiel will normally yawn when it is getting ready for a snooze & maybe have some feather dust up it nares so it will sneeze a lot but enz tiel has very red nares indicating a sinus infection from what is described. Most of my birds at the moment are sneezing as they are still going through a molt & you did mention monty is going through a molt too. Hope this helps. Don't think monty is sick as you would notice it. Cheers Anna

Hi Emz The symptons you described are those that are typical with crop stretching where the tiels stretch their throats whilst opening their mouths and usually means nothing but if contininous it could be "Canker" which is a throat legion that can cause these symponts but very rarely is it a problem in Tiels more so Pigeons. If you can catch up the bird with your thumb and index finger sqeeeze betwen the upper and lower beak forcing the Tiel to open its mouth and look down its throat(small torch will be handy) and look for any growth on one side of the throat, if so consult your vet for treatment Breeding is usually during the spring months and moulting is normally during the summer months depending on where you live cheers Frank

Hi Emz, look perhaps the advise is maybe scaring you, & don't feel that you have done something wrong you certainly haven't. Sometimes it is hard to advise on symptoms & it could be this or it could be that. I think to make you feel more secure that it would be best to take your tiel to an avain vet. I hope that we haven't upset you too much. Cheers Anna

Its not really scaring me as such, its surprising me because its all new to me, i know my avian vet will fix him right up..just trying to learn new things (like why, how etc etc).

No you are not doing anything wrong I amjust outlying the possibilities.Canker is a Bacterial infection which is easily treated but like i said and Kjjl has mentioned unless it is continious with the throat stretching then it highly unlikely and maybe just crop stretching, a vet will give you peace of mind cheers Frank
