Hi guys, I have got an 8 week old tiel, the breeder already had her wings clipped and has recommended to keep them clipped. Is this generally recommended? I also have a 2yr old daughter so don't know if it would be a good idea to have a bird flying around Are there any bad effects from keeping them flightless? thanks Sars

in my personal opinion its better for a companion bird to be clipped as they are less likely to become agressive and dominant and many birds will take fright and hit walls and windows or fly into things of danger and you are less likely to loose them out a door or window i usually just do the one wing as this way they can still flutter but are easly to catch but like i said thats my personal opinion others may disagree reguards polly

I have clipped my tiels wings from when she was young. She hasn't any ill effects from me doing this. Mind you I do let them grow back every mow and again. Just so she doesn't lose muscle tone.

Thanks guys. I think I will keep them clipped, it does seem a lot safer for the bird. Does muscle tone become a problem? She still seems to flap them a bit, is this enough ?

Hi Sars
I also prefer pet birds to be clipped but I prefer both wings to be done, about 4 or five flight feathers, just enough for them to be able to glide.
There are both positives and negatives to both flighted and clipped birds. It really depends on your lifestyle and personal preference.
We always let their flight feathers grow back in properly before clipping again.
Cheers

Hi Sars, from personal experience at doing my baby tiels just before selling, I only clip enough so that they cannot fly up high but can still fly at a lower level. That way I believe they will not loose the muscle tone needed & if clipped again properly they should be okay. None of my pet birds have their wings clipped, but I have set up my home so that there is no way possible for them to get accidently out plus my boys are all grown up now so I prefer free flight for them. But for new owners now I do clip the babys wings, much safer especially if the new owner have children & children do forget to close doors. Cheers Anna

I am personally in favour of wing clipping, otherwise they fly around madly and fly into windows and out doors etc.
