This is my first post here so first I would like to say "Hi Everyone" mic.claycomputer.com/screemingbird.wavI just got a Whiteface pied about a week ago.I don't know if it is male or female, it is my first bird.It is a very well behaved bird , came right to me when I bought it and still does every time I open the cage. Now ,with that said, the link above is the sound the bird makes when he is out of the cage. It doesn't act like it as mad, in fact it even plays with my watch and other things while making the sound. Now is this sound normal or is it tring to tell me something?

Hi Hardcorp. I have listened to your recordind & if it is still a young bird then I would say the sound it is making is what I call still begging to be feed. This is only a guess as the recording was hard to listen too. Some of my baby tiels in the avairy that were parent raised still begged for food even when the parents had stopped feeding them. They do eventually stop but it is a baby thing. Perhaps someone else here on the forum might have another answer for you, but that is just what it sounds like to me. Hope this helps, Anna

It does sound a bit like begging. Does he bob his head up and down while making this noise?

Yes sounds like begging for food to me, do you know how old it is, if it is young I'd think that it is still looking to be fed.

Yes,He will bob his head up and down at times. It is a young bird ,only about 6-8 weeks old so it may be begging?...now it eats seed all the time so it can't be because it is hungry...or can it?
With that said , I want to start it on pellets to give it more of what it needs. What else can I feed it to help keep it healthy?

Bobbing his head up and down and this noise is begging behaviour. I'm guessing he was aviary raised? I feel he is still quite young and could be doing this because of the stress of a new home.
Just because he appears to be eating seed doesn't mean he really is. Check to see if he is cracking the seed. If he is quite hungry he won't have the energy to crack and eat enough seed. Break an arrowroot biscuit in half and use a peg to peg the biscuit in his cage. These are okay as treats and will fill him up a bit quicker. You could also try millet sprays.
Personally I don't advise using a pellet diet for cockatiels, however, you can use them in addition to his seed diet along with corn, dandelion leaves, broccoli, carrots, capsicum, snow peas, apple, pear, orange, chilli peppers. Cockatiels also tend to like cooked brown rice, brown bread (especially toasted with peanut butter), rice cakes, popped corn, cinnamon sticks, mashed potatoes...and the list goes on.
Hope this helps

Thanks for your help.
There are a lot of "shells" in its food dish( about the top 1/3) and underneath the dish.So if it is beggin ...Man How much more could it eat! ;D
So I hope that it is because it is young yet

Hi, if there are a lot of husks in the seed dish, then Iwould say it is definately cracking seed by itself, so the begging for food should eventually stop as it is still a very young bird. I had one baby tiel last year that was definately weaned but continued to beg for food till it was about 12 weeks old. Me personally I will not sell a baby tiel till it stops begging for food but that is just me. Iwould go for a more natural diet for your tiel & would have to agree with parrotpotential, pellets are just not that good for your birds & does not supply everything it needs diet wise in my opinion. Sorry but there are no pellet trees in the wild Cheers Anna
