A cockatiel will moult at 5-6mthsold and then again at 11-12mths old then annually after each breeding season. The length of moult depends heavily on the weather as here in melbourne we are still having warm weather which has sparked a secound round of moult since xmas! cheers Frank

Well frank the same thing is happening here in Brissy too...at least for some of us. It was interesting to hear the difference in the stages of moulting breeders birds are in at the moment even within local proximity to each other. A guy that lives about 20minutes from me says all his birds are finished whereas I am still picking up feathers! Jo-Anne

Hi Jo-Anne,as i stop breeding at xmas most of my birds had completed moulting but some are now into their second moult this time round very confusing! ::)i do believe the irregular warmer weather pattern at the moment is responsible! cheers Frank

Thanks Frank,
If you haven't seen in my earler posts I have a Whiteface that I was told was 6-8 weeks old. And at this point it has a "hen like" face, with med-light gray ear patches. Is it possable for it to have a sudden color change with the first molt? or is it close to what it will lool like as an adult?

Both sexes look the same as juveniles. When it moults the male will get the white face whereas a hen will retain the juvenile look. Regards Jo-Anne

You know what, ive just realised i dont think my aussie has molted yet this is very strange as he/she is 8 months old. I always thought i would know if aussie was molting cos there would be feathers everywhere. any advice or info would be great. We are a little north of Brisbane, as said before aussie is 8 months old, a whiteface pied. Blossey
