we have just got a 10wk old male hand reared cockatiel....things were going ok at the start, he has only been eating sunflower seeds we have tried fruit and veg as well as eggs shell as per the pet shop advise as that is what they feed him....on friday we came home from work as normal but did not let him out of his cage as we had to go out again, we came home and let him out as he is a out bird not in, he hates his cage and loves attention....over the last 24hrs he has been getting worse, he tried to fly off my partners shoulder and crash landed into the polished floor, he has runny poop and constantly sleeping were ever he is play station our sholder or couch, he has not been drinking alot that we have seen. went to the pet shop and was advised to put some "elliott's sulpha d" into his water to help with the runny poop, he has got worse over the afternoon, he is also pinning i guess you would call it, it sort of sounds like a girlge. when my partener went near the cage mid afternnon he happily went in and fell asleep with out arguing so not normal for him, he has spent several hours in his cagge very happy not talking but not wanting to come out either we covered him with thick towels and placed him in a quiet dark room for a while, he has just been brought out and still just trying to sleep.....please help we jsut dont know what to do it is not normal for him... cheeky's owner

hello mellissa when handrearing everybody has there own way of doing it me personally if the little one was weaned at 42 days then in my opinion id has been forced weaned i dont even thing of weaning till 45 days and then i can be still feeding up to 2 weeks after that then i hold them a further 2 weeks after that to make sure they are feeding properly i would reccomend if you have any rice bubbles i would place some in the cage as they do like eating them will he eat out of your hand one thing you may try is get a tea spoone and just place soem budgie seed on it and place it near the beak and see if he/shee will try to eat some me personaly i would try to get to a vet ASAP to make sure that it has been weened properly as well as check the health regards bill

Hello Mellissa
I too would also be concerned that Cheeky has regressed and is looking to be handfed. You could also try breaking arrowroot biscuits in half and pegging them to cheeky's cage, they seem to like them and they are quick and easy to eat for a tiel that is weak and hungry. Next course of action would be to see a vet tomorrow.
We feed our tiels a variety of foods including:
good quality luvbird mix (small parrot) millet sprays broccoli snow peas capsicum carrots zucchini bok choy sweet potato sweet corn on the cob apple pears dandelion leaves milk thistles seeded grasses cuttlebone plus treats
Hope this helps

Hi Cheeky being lethargic and runny poos sounds very much like a sick bird I would get him to a avian vet as soon as possible as sometimes young handreared birds carrying hidden diseases and develop sicknessses soon after a change of enviroment which can spark the illness. I hope he/she gets beter soon Frank

Just wondering who you are getting on with your little Cheeky. I have been thinking a lot about you and your dear little sick one and hope he is getting better.

hi bill, frank, parrotspotential and kath, thank you all so much for your help, we have been unable to get cheeky to a vet as of work but we have been keeping a very close eye on him, we have had him in his cage at night in a quiet dark warm room and he is drinking a little whilst we are around with the solph d in it and we have added some other seeds to his food, we have also included in his cage some millet spray and fruity treats, he is pickingup heaps and no more runs, he has his moments with tiedness but over all is ok.....he has apeared to have lost some weight but we are going into our trusty great pet shop were got him to get some more stuff over the week end so will see what they think, they do have a vet so will take him with us.....all the advise you have all given has been great thank you so much....never thought there would some many great people willing to help.... cheeky's mum mellissa
