Why, oh why do people continue to feed their cockatiels on a parrot mix.
I have just got off the phone to a distraught couple, they had been out this afternoon and when they came home they found their tiel lying on the floor of the cage. After going through all the reasons why tiels can get sick they mentioned the parrot mix so I asked them to feel the keel bone and yep it was hard and sharp. Sadly the bird passed away while I was talking to them.

Hi Kim just wondering if you mean large parrot mix & no other foods or the type of parrot mix they used. Cheers Anna

They said 'parrot mix' so I'm guessing it will be a large parrot mix either that or a parrot mix (small parrot/luvbird) from the supermarket which will be crappy anyhow. They were supposed to ring and visit us yesterday but didn't. I wish they did.

That is so sad to hear, & yes the stuff from supermarkets can be quite crappy especially the large parrot mix. It is a shame really as I know they are making better ones especially for tiels with added stuff & selling them at the supermarkets. I am lucky that I have a local grain & fodder store down the road from me & I get mixtures of seed for my birds. Thanks for clearing that up for me. Cheers Anna

Hi Kim, I feed my Cockatiels love bird mix from Avigrain & would NOT feed the supermarket stuff as is to my birds. The Avigrain mix I find is excellent and contains a good mixture of seed I buy it in 20kg bags and the birds seem to thrive on it, as far as the supermarket seed I have used it to sprout in the past and with a little added oats and wheat, it works quite well.

I feed all my birds Peachface mix that I buy from the local Pet Store and add budgie mix to it for my burkes, turks and budgies. Plus I add hulled oats in winter. Am I doing the right thing? As well as greens of course.

Hi John and Laraine if you have mixed varieties in your aviaries then the Lovebird/Peachface mix is ok but if you would be feeding tiels only then I would suggest a Budgie mix with added canary mix and added grey sunflower as I found a lot of uneaten seeds in those Lovebird mixes especially the Safflower i have never seen it eaten, along with the milo and a few others seems to be a waist! Do the lovebirds eat these seeds? cheers Frank

i'm with Frank on this. I was constantly noticing my tiels wouldn't eat all the seeds that are in some of the mixtures.. The Safflower as Frank mentioned, was only used as a plaything.
