When I let my cockatiel Casper out of the cage this morning it looks like there is a bruise on his/her beak, it is just below the nostrils. Do birds get bruises on their beaks?

Your bird could have had a night fright. If he/she had hit the beck area this is what can happen..Night lights can stop night frights.

Thanks for the advice from both members. It is a reddish mark so I think it is a hit of some sort, maybe cage or window. Also are cockatiels allowed to eat mushrooms and gravy as we had mushroom and chicken on rice for tea and the only time he really eats foods other than seeds is from my husbands plate. Is this alright?

Hi Rebeljane, personally myself I would not let tiels eat mushrooms. Even though they are cooked they may contain harmful spores that are toxic to birds, especially when mushrooms start to show a bit of mold on them. Just my thought only. The chicken & rice are okay, but gravy has way too much salt in it for them. If your tiel must eat from hubbys plate, try some cooked veggies, like corn, sweet potatoe. peas, carrots, pasta etc. or even some salad veggies. Or even fool him by putting sprouted seeds on hubby's plate LOL. They seem to want whats on your plate but most times human food is not that good for them, so try to fool him a bit. Hope this helps. Regards Anna

Anna in regards to the salad stuff i was advised by several people that lettuce is bad for birds i am not sure if it is correct or not but i have never given my birds any regards bill G'Day Bill, Lettuce has a big water content and little nutritional value and will cause liver damage in birds IF given to them in big quantities, IE: every day, this stems from the old days when everyone used to give their pet budgie lettuce every day however today a lot more research has been carried out and a lot more information is available. As far as mushrooms are concerned I have no idea as i have never heard of anyone feeding them to their birds, I tend to shy away from giving my birds foods that are not tried and tested. John

My apologies Bill, I should have stated what kind of salad veggies & no I agree, I don't feed lettuce to any of my birds as per what John stated. Things like endive, chinese beans sprouts alfalfa, snow peas etc where more what I was thinking of. Cheers Anna
