I'm no expert but in winter I give all my birds hulled oats mixed in with their seed to help them put on fat for the cold weather. Perhaps that might help.

Hi Emz, my tiels seem to have lost interest in their veggies & sprouted seed too, & eating lots more seed. I add ( LSA ground up Linseed, Almond & Sunflower meal) mixed to their seeds with a bit of grapeseed oil, once a week when I change their seeds. You can get LSA from any health shop. You could also try ground up pumkin seeds or natural nuts like brazil, almonds hazelnuts etc as they contain the good oils, but again I only give it to them once a week. Birds need a bit more of the fatty seeds during winter, but don't overdo it as you don't want them too fat . this seems to work for me when they become a bit fussy. You could also try them on a bit of cooked porridge with a bit of soy milk, rice milk. Hope this helps. Cheers Anna

From memory the ratio is around 10% emz, I'm sure others will correct me if I'm wrong, I would also increase the sunflower seed to the diet too during the winter months.

I use about 10% of the hulled oats too. The Pet Barn pet shops sell the hulled oats and they are all over Sydney.

I was just wondering....would regular rolled oats and rice porridge be any good, or not?
I eat the LSA myself, and it helps. So, I reckon it would be good for the birds.

Hi Beachbird, I would only give rice porridge or rolled oats as a treat once a week or even longer than this. My reason behind this is that cooked cereals are carbohydrate based & lots of carbrhydrates are not good for birds given on a daily basis. It can make them very overweight just like humans especially if they are inside birds & not having much exercise. Just my thoughts only. Cheers Anna
