Hi all! ;D Just wanted to share that im a new mum again!..over the weekend i got given a baby tiel!  but its age is unknown, my other half got it from a breeder he works with but forgot to ask how old it is!..and knowing him he will FORGET To ask how old she is! (well i HOPE its a girl, as i have 2 boys already)... ive named her milly and she is still quite wobbly on her lil legs and she pretty much has no crest..except for one lil feather the rest are pin feathers...she also has a lil bald patch on her head which makes me think she is pretty young.. she has just started on seed.. hope someone can give me ideas on approximately how old she would be...thanks!... ;D.. |

Hi emz i dont want to alarm you but your bird sounds like its very young if its head is only pin feathers! is it possible that his/her head was plucked, as a weaned baby should be very strong on its feet and have a full coverage of feathering! ::)cheers

Thats what i thought Frank, i did state to my other half that it was WAY too young...but he pretty much informed me that if we didnt take it, it would of gone to a pet shop... so we didnt really want her to go to a pet shop.....what should i do? umm any extra pre-cautions i should take etc etc? i knew from the beginning she was to young but what could i do  |

Is the bird still begging for food or is it eating on it's own as it might need some more hand feeding

She/He is not begging at all! she is very quiet... does the occassionally head bob but that is all!...she does some baby chirps but no begging she pretty much eats millet spray all day...ive got her on my avian vets seed vitamin products etc etc ....should i wait until she is a tad older before i offer up some veggies?......seeing she is pretty young..should i handle her less?

Hi Emz, congratulations on your new baby. She does sound very young, maybe only about 6 weeks if it is still wobbly. Even though you say she is eating millet spray, I would strongly recommend that you get as much sprouted seeds, any other type of soft food, like grainy bread, rice bubbles, & other soft veggies like chinese bean sprouts, snow peas etc in to her if you can. No I think you should handle her as much as possible, especially if she was not h/reared. Helps with the bonding. Keep a close eye on her to make sure she is not mimicking just eating seed. Check for empty husks. Maybe check her weight if you can. Tiels should weigh between 90 to 110 grams at about 8 weeks old. Even though she sounds young you & hubby did the right thing as she would have probably died in a pet shop & as far as I am concerned you both have saved it's life. Cheers Anna

Hiya Anna, just wanted to say thanks for your advice .. i took baby to the vet and she is 150% healthy which kind of shocked my avian vet, and you are right she is approximately 6 weeks old. Her weight is spot on and shes doing very well!!..though she is playing with her veggies etc etc.. heheh but she loves her grainy bread and rice bubbles... she is very alert and very keen to be cuddled etc etc ....now my mission is to find another young tiel (and as hubby says..it'll be my last tiel for a while) hope to have pics up of my 3 kids VERY soon!.. thanks again Anna! ....take care....emz |

Hi Emz, that is great news about your new baby that she is fit & healthy & eating other goodies, well done.Well she certainly has found a loving home which is tops & I hope she will give you & your family many happy times & of course fingers crossed that it will be a female for you this time. Very hard to sex the little buggers at this age. What do the boy tiels think of her lol? Cheers Anna
