I havn't really seen much about red rumps here, but I havn't used the search button yet. (will be doing that in a mo!). Any how, I originally bought a normal pair of red rumps off a petshop, only to have the male pass away the next day. However the petshop did give me a new male who is apparently split. I've been told because the female is normal, they will only breed normal looking red rumps who are split for a split. Is this true? thanx for any help!

Hi Dee it all depends on what the male is split to.If he is split to opaline or cinnamon or Lutino then he has the genetics to produce hens of this variety if he is split to a recessive variety then yes all the chicks will be normal and only possibly split to whatever dad is split to cheers Frank

Thank you for that. I wish I knew what he was split for, but being from the petshop - they have no idea about these kind of things. I seached on this website for red rumps and found the lutino ones someone here had - what a beautiful coloured bird!!

Hello Dee, Being the resident Red rump breeder on the forum, I have about 6 pair, I can only endorse Franks advice here. It will depend on the split of the cock bird i have a couple split Opaline Cocks that have paired up with an Opaline hen the Opaline is from a pairing of a Opaline cock bird and a Normal hen this pairing has also produced Lutino hens and full Opaline hens along with split cock birds. Good luck with them they are a great bird and I love watching them.
