Hi all, 1 of my cockatiels got a fright from a nasty hawk who was sitting on my cockatiels cage. The cockatiel in question obviously panicked and flew into the wire till mum (me) scared the hawk away. As a result the little girl has some blood caked on her between the nostrils, I've kept an eye on it and it all looks fine but I wanted to know wether I should remove the caked blood from her beak or not, it's been almost 2 weeks since the hawk incident. thanking you, dee.

Thats usually the place that gets hit Dee young birds when they first fledge crash into things and usually it's the cere that gets hit. Providing the blood has dried and your birds is tame I would just wipe it with a damp cloth and see if it comes off, but don't worry too much about it it should be fine.
John PS: This is providing that the dried blood isn't blocking the nostrils of course, if it is then remove it straight away.

Dosn't seem to be bothering the bird, I havn't seen her try to scratch it off or anything. Its between the nostrils and not acctually blocking anything. But she's not tame, hence why I thought I'd ask and see if it was worth catching and stressing her out to remove the dry blood. Regards, Dee.

Hi Dee25, just keep a close eye on your tiel, but sounds like he/she is okay. When ever I see a little injury on my aviary birds, I like to catch them & put a bit of liquid betadine on a ear bud with gloves on of course. This will usually stop any infection from getting at it but seeing as your tiels injury has already crusted, I would leave it to heal itself. Cheers Anna

Just be careful Dee that the Vaseline doesn't get into the nostrils
