Hi all, Had a pretty amazing day today. Lost 4 budgies to a most unwanted visitor....a 1 and a half metre long Central Australian Carpet Python!!! The bugger had moved in at about 1:30 this morning, caused quite a comotion, and set up home in a budgie box. Polished off what was in there, and then decided to spend the rest of the day lazing away. At about 2 this afternoon, doing a little checl of boxes, and hello!!! Quite the suprise. A snake catcher came and got him, and you could see the buldges where the little budgies now were. I am just glad he didn't move into the box next door as that had 5 baby tiels in it!! I had wondered why i hadn't seen any mice for a while now. The snake guy reckons he was hanging around for a month or so, living behind the aviary. He found a gap in the roof and the wall, and in he went. If he had have found a way in down the bottom he would have polished off all my quials and eggs. It is a shame about the budgies, but it is also kind of exciting to see some of our more interesting Australian animals.

ooooh Lucky you! I actually like snakes, except the venomous ones, those I have a fearful respect for!! Shame about your birds though . I was actually going to organise a snake guy to come visit our bird club and speak about what to do when there is a snake in the aviary. You've justreinforced the idea. - Claire

All I can say is I am glad it was in your aviary and not mine! I am one of those people that are completely and absolutely terrified of snakes to the point of hysteria!! You would have know if it was in one of my boxes ....you would have heard me Australia wide from here!!LOL...and the sad part is I am not joking! After having spent 18 months living in a shed while our house was being built years ago and having to endure a red-belly black under my lounge chair and a huge brown snake trying to get in one of the shed at one stage...I have had all the snakes I care to!I become a screaming shaking jibbering mess at the sight of one now....so poor birdies would have been totally terrified twice in one day! Sorry to hear about your poor budgies, what a horrible ordeal for the wee chaps. As for looking in the nest box….. I would be like Jo-anne, my scream you would hear in Perth and I would have dropped that box like grease lightning and bolted. We lived for years with the great aussie bush as our back door and I had too many encounters with the darn things, you think you get used to them, but when one turns up in the most unlikely place, yep it can take ya breath away. Bet you have blocked up them holes now

thats not good to hear about your birds. we had a incident with a snake about 10 years ago. we were looking after a friends snake for a couple of days and he bought it over in a bird cage. the snake would have been about metre and a half long. anyway we coverd the cage and went to bed. next morning one of my dads friends came over to see the snake uncovered the cage and no snake. it was somewhere in our house. we found it wrapped around the motor in the washing machine. my mum was 2 scared to even sit out the front she left the neighbourhood until it was caught.
