i have a pair of quakers they are the most smartest birds i have seen but they are really noisy. Quakers make really great pets and are easy talkers, the male i have said hello and thank you he said his name fitle sticks that is what my son called him because quakers are one of the only parrots to build there nest out of stick. i would recomend a quaker as a pet if you don't mind putting up with there anoing chatering it drives me crasy when their is 2 goin off.

Kim,
Guess you've had your query answered by everyone else. :-) Have a few pairs myself and would never go without them. They are highly intelligent and playful. When in large colonies, can get a tad loud but nothing unbearable. WOuld definitely recommend them as pets to anyone.

macawVIC, you said you breed quakers, i'm just interested but do you give your quakers a nesting box or do you give them sticks ans let therm build their own structure?

Hi Jeremy,
I absolutely recommend the use of nestboxes. By providing a platform for building their own nest, all you're doing is encouraging uncontrolled breeding. Nest inspections become exponentially more complicated. I won't even talk about the possibility of disease and health maintenance. It's not unusual for a few birds to construct huge nesting infrastructures weighing hundreds of kgs.
Definitely recommend that you offer a nestbox. What I do with my pairs is as follows:
Cockatiel sized box filled with sawdust. I then place non-toxic twigs and sticks directly into the box. Also provide straw and more twigs, etc on the floor of the aviary/cage. The chewing and gnawing process increases the creation of saliva - twofold effect of bringing on the breeding cycle plus also increase the ambient humidity in the nestbox.
