I want to get a lovebird for a pet, a person I know has a few lovebirds but only one of them she has handraised lately, unfortunately for me she is very attached to it and won't sell it. Instead she has offered me one of her dilute violet masked, then only problem is they are not handraised but they are still fairly young and she has said they shouldn't be to hard to tame. I have no experience in taming birds so I was wondering if I should keep looking or how hard it is to tame a parent raised bird. I do not know of any other breeders in my area and I can't afford to go to Perth to find what I am after, and it is just my luck that this girl is moving to Perth very soon, lol.

Hello Cyra, you can tame young love birds and as it happens masked are one of the more docile species, but it does take a lot of patience on your part so be prepared to put in the long hours.

Yes, its still quite young, you will be able to tame it. The key is building trust. Feed it treats from your hand, so it gets used to your hands. And until it turns eager to run up to your hands for the treat, you can try to teach it step up. Once it learns to step up, then it probably trusts you soo much.

Yeah, time and patience and treats are the way to tame any bird. You need to be as calm as possible and if the session isn't going too well just put the baby back in the cage and try again later. Good luck though I'm sure you'll do well ;D

You are in WA?? Megzley is also in WA and is going to handraise one for herself (I just read the thread) maybe you could contact her and see where hers is coming from. You can tame any bird down, but the younger the better and you will need a lot of patience and spend a lot of time with the bonding with it. Good luck and I look forward to hearing about your new baby too. ;D

Well my lovie should be ready in about a week...maybe a little bit longer. I am getting it from the girl a mentioned earlier, it won't be as tame as the ones she usually sells as hand-raised because she has pulled it from the nest later than she normally does, as a result I am getting it for a little bit cheaper though so I am happy with that. I went and handled it today and it looks as though it will be a pied dilute violet masked (what a mouthful lol). We even picked a name for it. So hopefully within the next two weeks we will be welcoming little Cosmo into our family
