my lory has started hissing at me LOL. Please tell me this is normal or is he just getting excited? He does it when i am talking to him ect.... Also i think he may have lice poor boy. I wil head out in the morning and grab him some spray but i am NOT looking forward to it as we are still getting to know each other and hope he will be kind to me and not Bite. ;D another thing.. I was told today by the pet shop to give him Sulphadim. Does anyone else do this? the lady who sold it to me caught this coccidiosis or what ever and she sounds horrid so with kids i didn't want to risk it.

Hi Nova Is there something wrong with your Lorie? why would you give it Sulphadim? what makes you think he has lice? Im not saying that the pet shop owner is giving you the wrong information but I am always weary of pet shop people telling me any thing about birds, be carefull what you give your bird and be carefull what you treat it with, most of all be very very carefull of the diagnoses people give you.

No theres nothing wrong that i can see. But she said to give him afew drops in his water once a week to "prevent". Bugger i Hate when they do that. I just got worried from hearing her and having my kids around the bird. not that she knew about the kids lol)
I think he has lice as he is itching a fare bit!!!!

Hi Nova,
I think it mite be best for you to take him to a vet...With all what you are saying does not sound to good...And you should never give a bird medication with out a vets adivce..For all you are doing is mucking around with his system..and if there is some thing wrong there you could only make this worst if not given the the right treatment..and also make it hard to find out what is wrong for the vet, that if there is some thing wrong in the first place....Go to an avain vet for a check up..better safe then sorry..

He seems happy and goes nuts when u go out and chat to him (in a playful way) he just hisses when i talk. (could be my voice he doesn't like lol) he is eating, drinking ect...
he opens his mouth pocks his tounge out and does this hissing noise.
Oh i should add that i did not get him from this pet shop where i went today. Also she caught this off some wild birds elsewhere not in the store.

There is an old saying Nova "if it aint broke don't fix it" if your bird is healthy leave it alone. The particular medication you are talking about is used to treat respertory infection in birds among other things. Are you sure he is itching or is he just preening his self? Lories do that a lot .

There are no good signs Nova, as Natalie said the safe thing to do is take your birds to a vet if you think there is a problem. Aviary birds usually pick up lice from wild birds landing on the wire and there isn't much you can do about that, Make sure you Lorie has a place to bathe and change his water every day they love to have a bath.

A good way to tell if there are lice,is to go near the bird and is the avairy cage.If you start to get ichy and see things jumping on you that is one way..and about the hissing part does he/she bow the head as well while doing this..If so I thing you have a male there...

Hi Nova, I agree with the others, if your worried ,take him to an Avian Vet and get him checked, there are a couple of excellent avian vets in or near Brisbane. The advice you have been given about the Sulpha product is very bad advice, the person who gave it to you is one of the "preventitive medication school " Their idea is if you give constant medication, almost allways they suggest half dose, you will never have an illness problem. There are two main reasons you shuold never do this, and only medicate a bird if it is sick. #1 reason is if you constantly medicate a bird, with whatever product, its more than likely, that when you do actually have an ill bird, is that it wont react to the medicine your giving it because it has a build up of it in the system allready. #2 reason is that by constantly under dosing with "preventitive medication " you are actually making what I call super bugs, Birds normally carry small amounts of various bugs and viruses in their system and their system usually takes care of them by activating their own bugs to get rid of them. By constantly giving an under dose of a medication all you are doing is letting the bad guys build up an immunity. I know its hard when everyone is giving you conflicting advice, If Im in doubt I ask a Vet too. Hope this helps...Tony

Thank you so muchh for the advice. I have not used it so i am going to take it back in the morning.
You made a very good point Tony. If this did come about then he would not get the full effect from the medi anyway.
