Hi all, Hope someone can shed some light on my musk problem! I have a female musk about 12 months old and this morning I went to the aviary and it was perched with it's wings spread right out and its tail feathers fanned out. It seemed frightened and unstable. Now all day it is either like that or clinging to the side of the cage. It doesn't appear to be eating. I tried to catch it but it was just getting more stressed. I rang the vet he thought it may be fright but wasn't really forthcoming without seeing it.

Thanks Natalie, Yes did all that! We did have a stray cat hanging around but they are in an enclosed area closed in with shadecloth so I don't think a cat could get in. I thought if it was just frightened that it would be OK by now.

How long have you had the bird in the aviary...Is it a suspened.if the bird is not used to one...this could be the problem as well..But they dont take all day to to get used to things...I am just trying to think here...How did the bird react when you tryed to catch her...was she ok with balance..There is so much to look into here..

She's been in the aviary for about 9 months. I got her mate about 4 or 5 weeks ago and after a bit of chasing and sqabbling over food etc the last week or so they have been sitting together and very friendly. When I tried to catch her she just kept going to the other end of the cage and was very frightened and I didn't want to make her worse. It is a suspended but she's been in there for a while as I said. She seems to have a balance problem but I don't know why. She was a little better when I just went down and was sitting on the feed dish so maybe she had some food. I am so worried about her if she's no better tomorrow I 'll take her to the vet. Thanks for your help Natalie

OK with the balance problem...She mite have hit her head...I know you would feed your birds well..and there would be no chance of bad food around...and you would be feeding a well balanced diet...Do you scrub your cages down each year with vinegar..just trying to rule a few things out here....But if she is eatting now...thats a good sign...

Hi Natalie Yes cage was new when I put her in but I washed it with vinegar first and I hose them down every week. I don't leave any foord in more than a day and I give them wet & dry lori mix from Parrot Society and fruit and vegies and grevillea flowers. Calcium supplement and worm every three months. Don't know what I've done wrong!!

Lets hope all it is that she did hit her head...Pity you could not catch her for a closer look at the head...Have a good look at the feathers on the head and see if there are any feathers a missing.Thats with out catching her....But since she did go down and eat is a good sign..

Musk much better today took her to Pollparrot and we tried to crop feed her but Vicki seemed to think she had a sore throat. Yesterday been giving her food on my finger and she has been licking it off. This morning she ate a little bit by herself. Have her upstairs now in small cage so I can keep a watch on her. So here's hoping!!!

Well, put her back in the aviary yesterday as she was eating and seemed OK. Went down this morning and she was eating OK when I put the food in but after that was all stressed again. I decided that maybe she didn't like the aviary so I put them in another aviary but she still doesn't look too good. I really don't know anymore.

Did you have a look inside the mouth..if there was any redness...or white spots...I would be putting so Apple cidar vinegar into the food..This will help if there is a problem there with sore ness...It is will not hurt her..about one mil to a cup of food or water...and it will not hide any think..that is when you take her to the vets...It is not good to have a bird stressed out..it can bring all sorts of nastys out...and if you do have some camamil tea...how ever you spell that..that could help with the stress..put into her water or food...and add a little natural honey as well...10% is all that you should use in volume to water..
Some think is a mist with her..Maybe if you got polly to come over...and to study what is going on...a new face to it all will help..You mite have missed some thing..
I would have her inside till you work out what is going on...for the stress alone will kill her....

Sorry but I don't have a digital camera so a photo is out, but the aviary is about 3 metres long closed in at one end and half roof colorbond 1/4inch wire all round, suspended, 1 metre from ground and 2 metres height in total. Also about 1.2 metres deep. Nest box at the closed in end plenty of perches feed station at other end. The bird is very unstable on a perch sometimes puts it's wings out to balance. Other times tends to hang on wire and grip wire with beak as well. Cage is about 12 months old and bird has been in there for about nine months. I have now moved it to a conventional aviary.

Well I don't believe it but she's fine back in the conventional aviary with her mate, eating drinking and playing like there was nothing wrong. It's got me beat but I'm not complaining. The only clue I have is that we saw a fox in the yard about a week ago and I'm wondering if it frightened her. Thanks for your interest!!!
