Hi, just announcing that i have finally acquired a pair of Sun Conures that i hope to breed in the next year or so. The cock is 6 months old and the hen is 5 months old, they are both handraised and when i enter their aviary to feed them they both fly onto my head lol! They are little characters and aren't as loud as i expected which is good ;D I will try my best to get some pics in the next month or so

Gday Jeremy,
Congrats on your purchase. I've bred sun conures for the last XX years and would definitely recommend them to everyone. Well, perhpas not everyone as their calls can get a little grating...a lot actually.

Wel because of their inquisitive nature, the cock has just been to the vet to be treated for Heavy Metal Poisoning. He is ok but i have to inject him everyday for 1 week and then once a week for 3 weeks. I have scrubbed the cage with vinegar and water and he will back in his cage in a month. I hope it doesn't happen again

Hi Jeremy,
Sorry to hear that. Unfortunately, what people don't realise is that even with our upmost duty of care, there's little we can do re: heavy metal poisoning. It does help to use a diluted vinegar wash on cages. However, there will always be traces left and with natural weathering, more elements will become exposed. I have a bank of 4 aviaries which would be over 10 years old, but only 5 months ago, one of my quakers got heavy metal poisoning. * shrug * go figure.
One thing you will have to do is to offer calcium supplements to your conure. The medication which you are administering to your bird will bleach your bird's bone of calcium. Therefore, I recommend offering calcivet to him every couple of days. Just my two cents.

hi jeremy. a bit late on this post. but when your suns start to breed. And they fly onto your head, you could be in for a nasty surprise. the pairs that we have, And hand raised. turn attack trained and very cranky.Ihope this dont happen to you. once the box, chicks, eggs are removed and a week or too has passed they become the sweet, lovable squawking machines that they are. with one hen i had to sacrifice my finger, then she became the sun that i first brought home.

iwantmore, that shouldn't be a problem because they are in a suspended aviary but then again it could still happen
