I bought a green ring neck this morning but have never heard one use it's call I have seen afew around ect just never heard one till now. Oh boy i hope the neighbours don't mind. He sounds like a loud lazer gun. My Q is this...... Please tell me they don't do this first thing in the morning? Is there a Mute button for these birds? LOL. doesn't help that my DH is on niteshift and is asleep. so far he hasn't come out and said anything. do they do this alot? or could it just be he needs to settle in?

Nova, just put it to bed in a dark quiet spot and completely cover it with a dark sheet, I do this every night with my birds and I uncover them after 8am otherwise I would not be able to keep them as my neighbours are intolerant of any noise, I even have covers on my aviary that I just pull down at night and lift up in the morning, works a treat.

I have three ringnecks and a lorikeet inside in my tiny longue, a breeding pair (which i had to bring inside as there are so many cats around and they were so upset that if u even looked at them they would panic and fly around there avary and smack into things and we r moving inna week so it really wasnt a problem bring them in, all should be alot better and they should be able to go back outside) and one tame ringneck, i must be lucky the only time mine make noise is when they have had a fright or when my tame one is yapping away to himself lmao infact my lorikeet is the 'pain in the butt' so to speck when it comes to noise, its HER that wakes the kids every morning even if she has got her cover on, she is louder than all three ringnecks put together! lol
Wish u luck with yours, he may settle down with time and when he starts to talk.
One thing my sister has done with hers and seems to work is when they make the noise gently tap his cage, say no... cover they cage with a dark sheet for a while till they r quiet again then take it off, eventually they learn its not an 'acceptable' thing to do and learn that making these sounds earns him a time out which they dont like. Also rewarding with a treat for being quiet may help too ;D

Well i am happy to report so far so good LOL. My son said he/she made a little noise this morning but not to loud (well i slept thru it so couldn't have been to bad LOL) he did it afew times this afternoon but only 3 or 4 times and seems to have turned down his volume *phew* He is starting to get to know me now,i was sitting near him and he was right into the corner of the cage listening in on my chat turning his head to the side as if he/she was taking it all in ;D (sticky beak) Have no idea what sex he/she is. theres no ring and the guy who sold him/her to me said he was sure it was a male. would be nice to know but won't put him/her thru a dna test as he/she is just a pet not going to breed ect so will wait and see i guess. I am sure he said he was about 18mths. I took a pic but not to good so will get a better one tomorrow.

Usually once they get used to the fact that the cover at night or when they are noisy is the go, they usually accept it and keep quiet

Nova if your ringneck is about 18 mts, if he is a boy he will get his ring at the end of this year. Start looking for little signs, if he is a boy he will open his wings and dance on the perch.

Hi Nova, The other way to go with noise is to re-enforce the "good" quiet behaviour and try to ignore the less acceptable behaviours. When your bird is quiet, tell it that is a good bird & make a big deal of the fact it is quiet. If it gets noisy just walk away, don’t look, don’t say anything, just walk away. As soon as it is quiet come back immediately and praise it, even give small pieces of its fav food. The reward is you coming back & being with it.
, I’m very lucky Bella gives a few calls in the morning and some, some nights (not every), but some. But these are not ear splitting These you have to accept, as they are normal natural behaviours Make sure your bird has some toys and change them regularly, they don’t have to be expensive shop bought ones, a practice golf ball stuffed with paper, a washed milk or soft drink bottle lid, pieces of gum branch cut up drilled with a piece of sisal rope thru the middle, Do a search on Parrot or bird toys on the internet & you will be amazed at what you can make for your bird. Have fun sue
