Arent Alexandrines as popular as Indian Ringnecks?? I have been on a few forums looking for info on Alex's and most of the people own IRN's. I realise because they are similar that a lot of info would be the same, but I was just wondering, which one is more popular.
That could be another excuse for another bird. "but darling, the IRN's are more popular, that is why I want one" ;D
Just joking, I bought myself a baby alex after getting off to a bad start..............long story, but I did post about it in Squark talk.

There are more ringnecks around than Alex's but Alex's are gaining in the popularity stakes, I've found ringnecks to be surging in popularity at the moment, as a lot of people want a hardy medium sized bird and some find Alex's a bit big, so it depends on weither they want medium or large, basically they have the same requirements, but I prefere ringnecks as I had to sell my 2 beautifull Alex's because they are fairly clumbsy and I have young children with Aspergers syndrome and they moved to fast and the birds kept falling off their shoulders, ringies however are unshakeable, this is a pic of my baby Buster before I sold him img.photobucket.com/albums/v499/kim1/8f2e1408.jpg boy do I miss him.

It was really hard to part with him but I see him all the time so that makes it easier, Wilber the ringneck looks like a little snot in that photo, this is him practising flying, the blue ringie is Azure, they love those Ixora plants, they keep the well pruned.

wow thats what my rocko is going to look like when he gets bigger.... such a long tail.... rocko only has a stumpy short tail right now.... are they in a aviary or something in that photo or out in the open lol im scared looking at it incase they might fly away one day...

actually Azure's tail is longer now, he was only 8 mths old in that pic now he's nearly 2 yrs old, I looked at Rockos photo and his tail looks to be a bit damaged from being in too small a cage, now you have him in a larger cage and with the moult comeing up ( between now and March) his tail will grow back soon.

By the way, no they aren't in the aviary, that was taken in our front yard, they have one wing clipped though, but on average they spend 4 hrs a day outside with us while hubby gardens etc, they love it they prune all the plants and reorganise all the woodchip, even the babies I'm handraiseing at the moment are spending about 1/2 an hour in the garden playing in the wood chip, we are with them though or nearby in case of preditors.

do you think i should clip rockos wing?? he has never been able to fly anyways so i dont know if he will know how.... he has never left his cage except when he was being hand fed they said....
might have to wait and see how taming goes later on to make that decisions... my birds are normall cliped once when they are little and by the time they grow back they are pretty tame so it hasnt been a problem...

I wouldn't try it untill you gain his trust a bit more, or he might hold a grudge, they tend not to forget things.

well i wasnt planing on re taming yet.. im way to scared of that beak right now... we will just stick with hand feeding in the cage and patting his beak form outside the cage.... so it is something to think about anyways.... thanx for your help.

Have to agree with Kim on clipping Rocko's wings. Wait till he gains your trust and feels more comfortable around you. They are very intelligent birds and can hold a grudge for quite a while. I'm sure in time you will have no problems at all retraining him as he already seems a lot more comfortable around you. Plus if he has been stuck in a cage for all that time then he needs to build up musculature for flying for a few weeks then think of clipping his wings. All birds should be allowed to fly before clipping wings, it just makes more sense. Cheers Anna

He is a beautiful Alex, it makes me sad to think I had to give Kumar back because of his beak. But my new one will grow quickly. My Kumar seemed more darker green on the wings and he had a long tail at 3 months. Maybe there are different sub species? Like there are in eelectus (I have a female red sided one of them too and she is lovely and I have taught her to do some tricks too.) ;D

I know what you mean about the gust of wind, I have tested mine to make sure they can't fly and I'm carefull not to take them out on a windy day, I also do not take them for walks up the road like I see a lot do, any bird can be startled and jump of your shoulder, I had an experience with Ziggy (our green ringie) I was standing near the road out the front yard, as we were having a garage sale, when my daughter put him on my shoulder, a sudden gust of wind blew him on the road, and a car hit him. It was horrific, I was sure he'd die, he lived but still has a limp today 2 yrs later. you can't be too carefull.

I have lost a lot of cockatiels from being clipped but getting caught in wind gusts - and I never got any back Now my ekkie has a harness when walking around even though I have clipped her again. She was flighted for a while, but safety and her "attitud" deemed it better to have her clipped. But she will still be wearing a harness when out and about and my baby alex will be the same when he is old enough.
