Do you mean before the male gets his ring? So that you might be able to sex them visually before maturity? I have a blue cock and yes, his head is a bit lighter than his body but as I only have the one blue I do not have anything to compare it to. He is about 2.5 years old. Sorry

yes i was hoping their might be an easy way to tell before the ring develops. i have a blue supposed to be hen 04 breed that is begining to get a ring and i know some females get a bit of a line so i might have to wait and see when breeding time comes around i think. thanks for replying anyway Debbie

Sorry I can't help either as I have a lutino but s/he is only about 4-5 mo so it is too early yet, even though it seems like a she to me.

You can quite often tell sometimes by the personality. The females tend to be more nippy and territorial about their cages. I had a lutino IRN (until the staffy let her out of the cage). she was only about 12 months old when she flew out of her cage, but I reckon she was a she because she become very nippy and territorial even though she was handled every day. I was the only one game to handle her in the end.

Interesting, Sorry to hijack the thread for a little. I saw a pair of blue ringnecks available today for $400 and their baby for an extra $100. What is the normal price for birds like these? The birds were a breeding pair that belonged to the store manager of a pets paradise store. To be honest I didn't notice much of a difference between the pair apart from the fact one was bigger than that other and had a longer tail. However, I'm not very familiar with this bird.

Male ringnecks should have a dark ring around their neck and a bigger head...........when comparing to the female.
I have seen then for as cheap as about $150 each to over $200 each per bird for the blues depending on where I have seen them.

OK, well that's good to know. Shame I didn't have a spare cage then. I wouldn't have minded the baby one ;D.
