Hi,
I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice. I have to male alexs that are about 3 years old, they are brothers as I got 2 at the time to keep each other company. I was thinking of breeding them. They live in an aviary which is triangle shaped 1.5 meters on each side and about 2 meters high. I was wondering if it would be large enough to put 2 females in, on should I just get one? How would they all get along? I don't want to do anything if it's going to distress them but I would like to give it a try. Any suggestions would be appreciated. thanks yvonne

Hello and welcome to AussieBirds Yvonne it's nice to see another Sydney sider at the forum.
I personally would not put two females in that size aviary with two males, they are large birds and need their space especially if they are going to breed.
Remember you are going to have to put at least two nest boxes in the aviary and you are starting to crowd thing up a bit and I believe you asking for trouble, in an aviary that size I would only accommodate one breeding pair of Alex's.

I agree with John.............just one female and I would probably put the other male in a separate cage or try to get another aviary and get him a "wife' too. Pauline (petiel) breeds alex's too ........ I got my boy from her and her aviary was pretty big. Hopefully she will come on and give some advise too.

Hmm.. if that is the case I might just leave them be. I don't want to seperate them, as they get along well and have been together since birth and I won't be extending any aviaries yet... I may do that later on.. They seem pretty content as is, is it ever more beneficial to pair birds up? Thanks for the advice. yvonne

Not necessarily..........my ekkie is over 2 years old and just discovered her hormones........but as yet she doesn't have a boyfriend, I am considering getting her one, but still not positive i want to do that. I have a male and female alexandrine, but not for breeding purposes. I have wanted a male for some time now...........but have ended up with 2 females (rehomed one..........and did have a beautiful male but only for 5 days and had to give him back to the breeder on 2 vets advise)............I finally have my male and am not planning on breeding him.........but who knows. Your boys have companionship and unless there are hormonal problems or unless you specifically want to breed...........then there is really no reason to encourage it..................just my honest opinion.

Yvonne that size aviary would be too small to breed two pairs of alex's. They love to have plenty of room to fly. I would keep the two boys together as they are mates.

Whether or not to pair birds up really depends on what you want from them, once you get them wives they will probably lose interest in you. So if you want to keep your bond with them I'd just keep the boys.
