Hello All Thanks to your great replies i decided to get an Alexandrine boy, when i went to see the birds he seemed the best and snuggled up to my neck hehe, even got him to kiss me and step up twice. He is'nt good at stepping up yet but its late so i didnt have much time to spend with him cause he is probably tired, i hand fed him for awhile then put him in his cage and covered it up. Spent about 2 hours with him when he got home before i put him to bed as he seemed tired. Any tips on diet, taming, training will be greatly appreciated. The name i am thinking is "Jet" What you all think? THanks alot! NOW PHOTOS! hehe breakfast on his 2nd day with me he just wandered around the breakfast bar eating whatever he wanted.

Congratulations on becoming a alex owner. You will not be sorry and you will have a best friend for life. Alexandrines will eat everything you give them they are not fussy eaters at all. They will eat different dried cereals, all fruits and vegies, plain biscuits, pellets, nuts, small parrot seed. My boy eats everything. How old is he?

Hey guys is this normal? he seems very quiet, doesnt move around alot , doesnt step up very well, wont eat apple that i gave him, sometimes bites when i insist on stepping up (not hard )etc. This is my first day with him, he sits on my hand doesnt run away, lets me touch him anywere but those other things worry me.....Am i expecting too much for first day. He steps up somtimes but not much he seems very stubborn and doesnt like to do it much, will this change with time? Please give me some insight into how long it took your birds to tame and step up and be more active. Is it normal to not be very active first day? Any tips? Please give me some insight i dont want to spend so much on a bird that wont be my little companion. Im not giving up just need some advice etc

Hello there .............. don't panick it is his first day. He has been taken from his familar surroundings to his new home and is scared. All of the above it very normal for alex's. The can just sit there for the first few days while sussing out their new home and gaining their confidence. How old is he??? Are you finishing handraising him? Believe me he will be your best friend, just give him time within a few months you will be saying all the things he is doing now and how happy you are with him. they are not active like the lorikeets and we did tell you that, but they are lovely birds who do love to be with their "human" friends and family if handled and socialised properly. just like any bird you need to handle it and socialise it. the tameness and friendliness doesn't just happen. He will need to be taught to step up too and when babies they are not used to doing this so needs to be taught. Every time you put your hand in the cage to get him out........tell him "step up" when you put him back tell him "step down or step back". Takoda is only 4 months old and steps up even when I put his food dishes in his cage because he thinks he is coming out. lol Being a baby too they do sleep a fair bit too.........so if he is sleeping ......... let him sleep and make sure he goes to bed reasonably early too. No late nights for him until he is a bit older. also most baby birds do go through a biting stage............you need to teach him this is wrong. At the moment he is probably just testing his taste buds out. He will probably not like everything you give him to eat either at the moment.......he needs to learn, taste, play experiment with food. that is why I give my babies soooo much variety of foods every day so they get used to seeing the different foods and tasting and playing with it. i know now that Takoda loves cherries, Shrekie and Skye just love food...........they eat everything but Takoda is still a bit fussy because he is a baby.

I am guessing you are very new to birds That is great...........you will learn so much from all of us here on this forum. a lot of what you will learn is very generic for all birds not just for alex's especially when it comes to taming and training.........even the food is basically the same for most birds. My eclectus has a slightly different dietry requirements to most other birds but it is not difficult or too different. When in doubt.................ask us we love to help out

Kuruptz, Tracey is right about what she has said about your baby. Is he a DNA sexed Boy? He will learn the Step up and will learn it very fasted. They are just like little puppies the older they get the more they will learn. Also did the breeder give you a list of the wearning foods your boy was weaned on, that always helps to know what foods he likes. My babies that I am weaning now get chopped up grapes, cherries, apples, oranges, snowpeas, mixed veggies, silverbeet, carrot, strawberries, corn, sprouted seed, milk arrowroot biscuits, cherrios, weetbix, that get a plate of that every day. And they are 9 weeks old and eat it all.

Ok well good signs, he went from my bed out my door into my mums lounge room and explored WOOOOO! It was so awesome to watch, then he went and climbed up my mums chair and sat there was sooo cute, he then had a sleep Im so glad he explored i love it. GOOD SIGNS 1st day and exploring. He also figured out how to use his hands to hold a rice cracker and eat it, took him about 2 minutes it was adorable. He also makes this little chirp noise when i kiss him or come close, its the cutest sound. He ALSO figured out how to get out of his cage which i did as a test, i put him in then opened the door and pegged it up and he came out after a minute or two, i did this to make sure and see if he actually wanted to be out of the cage and he did , he came out and sat on my leg. ALL this happened within 1 hour of my last messege, this is great signs right?

I am very glad to hear this, but even if it took a couple of days for this to happen that would be considered perfectly normal too. Jet sounds like a great name for him too.
