Hey guys
When i got my Alexandrine i got his wings clipped but not enough as my dad was an interfering bum like he always is (kept saying "thats enough, let him fly a bit") even though the breeder said he will still easily fly with the wings thats left.
Is it best for bonding/training etc for him to not be able to fly? cause i am thinking of getting his wings finished off so he cant fly as he fly's around my room and wont stay on my shoulder for long without wanting to have a fly.
Thanks

Sounds like a good idea, because then he won't hurt himself on the walls and also you'll be able to spend more time with him.

clipping wings definelty helps with the taming and training and with birds who have attitudes too.
We only owned Fezz for a few hours when we clipped him. Hubby towelled him and I clip..........he wouldn't go into his cage and wouldn't come off shoulders and just flew around the place. As soon as he was clipped and realised he couldn't fly............he was a very good boy and we have no problems with him going back into his cage or anything now.
When my ekkie was fully flighted she developed attitude with a capital A...........I decided it was safer for her to be clipped........it was too hard free flighted as the kids leave doors open, ceiling fans turned on, stoves etc......they did not think to put her back into her cage or shut doors and turn fans off. Once clipped again................she was my lovely little girl (until her hormones kicked in and clipping wont help that)
All my birds are clipped but wont be if going to be in an aviary.......only pet birds are clipped.
So YES ............. my advise is to clip him and make sure he can only glide down, not get altitude.

Oh ok cool, I knew i was right, now to find a place to get it done as i dont want to (might lose his trust) and don't really know how.
I could go back to the breeder and get him to do it i spose.
Unless its easy? and wont make him hate me, you guys/girls think its best for someone with experience to do it?

Take him back to the breeder and let him finish the job kuruptz, don't try it your self. It's best to have them clipped to the point where the bird can just fly to the ground without hitting the ground hard and hurting them self.

If you prefer your alex to be flighted you can always let his wings regrow in a year or so when you're bonded, but for now it'll be best they are clipped for the bonding process.

yes Jane that is correct ............. you can let the wings grow back.........some birds are fine with full flight.........but I have found most birds do develop attitude fully flighted and for me with sooo many kids in the house and animals etc........it is just safer for the birds to be clipped.
I clip my own but have been doing it since i was 13/14. You could take him back to the breeder or to a vet.....but the vet is going to cost you. If the breeder doesn't mind then they could also show you how to do it. If i lived near you i would come over and do it for you.

got his wings clipped today, he doesn't seem his usual self today, he is very quiet and wont step up very well even though he was really good at it.
Its as if he is depressed/not happy with me.
Is this normal?

He will get over it. My birds sulk for a while usually a few hours then they snap out of it. Keep playing with him etc .......... he will be fine. He will probably also stay on your shoulder now too. ;D
