Hi all Thank you for the replies to my cry for help. I have decided that we would like to get her a green cheeked conure. We have two budgies and we bought Chloe (my daughter) a cockatiel from a pet shop a couple of years ago. It was supposed to be old enough and cost a fair bit but it died quite suddenly about 4 weeks after we bought it. Chloe was devastated, so I don't think I'll go for another cockatiel - too many memories of Snowy. Does anyone know of any breeders of Conures in Townsville North Queensland.
Thanks again Suzy

Vankarhi might be a good one to ask about that...she is from up that way I know a guy who has a pair with babies in the nest at the moment that he will be hand raising but I am Down near Toowoomba. If you were OK with freighting it I could ask him what he will be selling the at?

Hey there again Suzychloe As luck would have it, I remembered seeing an ad for green cheek conures on petlink a few days ago, and checked again - as of two hours ago the person selling them still has two - a boy and a girl. This is the link if you're interested: www.petlink.com.au/Classifieds/sale/694759.html the price is $230 each, and have been DNA sexed. That's not a bad price, so I'd see if you canl view them at least and make sure they seem healthy and alert. I hope you enjoy having a green cheek - they really are beautiful birds. My Jedi is such a little snuggle bunny it's amazing sometimes - especially when she does things like roll onto her back for a belly rub. XD

Thanks everyone
The girl will be 10.5 weeks old on 11/11 and the boy will be 9.5 weeks old on 11/11. I can't pick either up til them. Should I wait and try and get one a little younger and which sex do you recommend?

Hey Suzy Age shouldn't be a huge problem - Jedidah was around 8 months when I got her and while it did take her a couple of weeks to settle in I've not had any problems with her. As for gender - I seem to keep getting hens, although it's definitely not been planned that way. Is the breeder unwilling to part with them until the 11th, or are there time constraints? If it's the former, perhaps see if you can take your daughter out to meet them so she can make a decision. I don't know which is thought to be a 'better' pet in terms of gender, but I'm sure others (Petial?) will be able to help you with that. Does your daughter have any preference if gender doesn't matter?

Greencheeks wean between 8 and 12 weeks, from what the internet tells me, so 10/10.5 weeks would be a good age to take a baby home (anyone, feel free to correct me, haha) Either sex is fine, although cocks mean you dodge the possible "joy" of nestiness. edited to add: members.tripod.com/gcch/faq.html seems pretty helpful

Its sounds like a good age to me, as farseeker said see if you can handle both and maybe one will choose you

At that age either one should be ok. They are almost the same age. I dont think you need to go for a younger bird ............ by the sounds of it they are both babies anyway. I myself prefer males as pets but I have no experience with Greencheeks other than seeing them and thinking they are sweet little birds. Having said that I prefer males as pets (in birds in general) my female alexandrine is a lovely bird though.
Good luck and yes I also like the idea of being able to play with both birds and watching their personalities and maybe even letting one of them pick you............or you pick the one you think will suit you better.
My border collie picked me. I sat on the floor with the puppies and I was allowed to pick one out of 4.......they all come around me and licked like puppies do, but Mysta plonked himself in my lap...........and that is where he was staying. ;D
