Hello fellow bird lovers,
Typically how are alexandrines or birds with other birds?
I have a hand raised alexandrine about 1 year old and he has never been around another bird?
My girlfriend is getting a bird, how do i introduce them to each other?
How do i tell if jet likes the other bird?
Generally how does meeting another bird work?
THANKS!

Hello again ;D with any bird you will need to introduce them slowly. I believe both birds should have their own cages and after the quarantine period........say 4 - 6 weeks (I would try 4 weeks and take the new bird to the vet for check up etc etc) then you could put the cages next to each other and let the birds see each other etc etc. Then after a couple of weeks let them out to play on a play stand together and just watch carefully to see how they react to each other. I cannot let my ekkie out with my other birds and my male alex Takoda doesn't like other birds. He thinks he is human. Actually he did seem interested in Shrekie my female alex a few weeks ago when I had them on the play stand together.........my playstand is huge though and I watched them carefully.
I would not let them be permanently housed together though, just out time together if they do get on. Just my opinion. ;D
But then I had a cockatiel in the same cage as my galah for a while. They really only ever just tolerated each other, but never had any problems with them.

so she cant just bring her bird over to visit, it will need to be a long process before i let them near eachother? Cant i just put them near eachother and if no aggression let them do there thing? If they get aggressive they wouldnt be hard to stop, i mean birds often show signs of attacking before they do. They wouldnt be left alone together. Its just the bird wont be living here so what you have said it sort of hard

well as a visitor it should be ok as long as they are watched. Yes birds do normally pin and fluff up and carry on when they are going to be nasty but you do still need to watch them until you are sure they are ok together.
As a visitor you could always just keep them on your shoulders anyway if there are any problems.

Quarantine is difficult when visitors come with their birds...........if you know the people and the bird then a visit should be pretty safe....as you would possibly know if it is sick or not....or if it is not being looked after properly and thus at a risk of getting sick.
Quarantine is a good idea when bringing a new bird into the family though. ;D
