Hi, I'm interested in purchasing a few red browed finches. I know I can't buy any yet till my licence is approved but I have a few questions. What is the average price for a red browed finch? I'm located in Belmore NSW, am I able to keep the birds outside in a small aviary/large cage arrangement? (there are some conflicting resources I want to make sure I don't accidentally expose the birds to harsh weather conditions). Worming treatments, what do you reccomend? I use avitrol wormer but the packet states that some finches and parrots are sensitive to the contents. BTW I've done lots of reading on their care, I personally haven't owned finches before although I've had lots of experience in bird care and mum owned some double bars and canaries in the past. I will also consult with my avian vet Ross Perry if I have any significant difficulties caring for them. I am well aware that they are not the typical finch hobbyists begin with however I feel confident that I will provide them with all their basic needs. thanks

Hi Klara, I'm just down the road from you at Peakhurst, Red Brow finches are a great addition to any aviary and are reasonably hardy and easy to keep they interact with other finches very well, I can recommend them. I have found the best place to find finches around our area is Better Birds at Revesby and Keven, the owner, is very knowledgeable regarding them. I kept red brows in an outdoor aviary for many years and had no trouble with them at all, I suggest you go and talk to Kevin regarding wormer and the conditions they can be kept in.

Next friday there's a NSW avicultral society meeting 5 minutes walk from my place!!! (I wish i'd known their meetings were that close sooner .) It's just in the street behind me and I was hoping to ask some questions about the finches there. My dad's also interested in asking a few questions, I gave him a rainbow and now he's lorikeet mad! Getting the finches isn't a problem, I know a few places myself that could get them in. Just wanted to know how much the avarage going rate is, I have a habbit of being ripped off! Thanks for the info. I'm glad to hear their not as sensitive as some finches because I've had my eye on them ever since seeing a wild population at the Reptile Park. First things first getting the licence! I think I'll sign up for the 5 year one.
