I rescued a number of finches last year (about 23)...quite a mixed bag actually. Well anyway the mixed bag turned out to have a male cutthroat in it...no prob thinks I to pair him off!1 Pfft after checking out pet shops etc I found that hens alone were selling for upto $46 ea...well my poor male remained a bachelor for the entire season as I simply refuse to pay that much for a hen when a pair is about $60....was terribly listening to him call and whistle all season for a mate. Well I attended a chook/bird auction about a month ago and lo and behold a hen cutthroat is there, boxed all by herself. I am thinking she'll go for a pricely sum but decided to bid anyway.Turned out I was the only bidder and picked her up for the princely sum of $10. My male was beside himself when I got her home and into the aviary and took the liberty of attempting to "rape" her within seconds....couldn't believe he found her in a mixed aviary so fast. Hmm well it looks like they have decided to try and bring out some babies as she has gone straight to the nest Wil let you know how they go...yep it is very late in the season but what the heck if they want to than I am not going to stop them.

UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE
Whilst doing a quick nest check this afternoon I note that my male Cutthroat can't be found amongst everyone flying around.
I have a good old fossick and sticy beak in all the nests and lo and behold there is the little beggar sitting there peering just above the nest material at me. Anyway I seems they have hatched at least 1 baby, perhaps 2. Horny little beggar. Was very interesting noting that he was sitting on the nest and not the hen, mean't to go out and see if the hens is doing the night shift but as it got darker I forgot and is way to late and dark to go and have a look now as it will spook everyone and the silly doves will kamikaze into the wire for sure!!
Yay my first cutthroat babies!!

Not sure about a record. Had a better look this morning and the hen was on dayshift. Looks to be 3 babies, but can't see very well...darn things have filled the nest with feathers to overflowing

UPDATE: The new babies were found on the floor of the aviary this morning...hate finches, they seem to get out of the nest earlier than they should. Anyway having never bred cutthroats before if I am correct I have a pair first go. I am thinking the male has a red throat coming through already..otherwise it has been attacked as very red around that area. BTW they are now back in the nest but for how long will remain to be seen.

Great work Zeb cut throats are not easy to breed, as far as the babies are concerned if they keep jumping out of the nest just keep putting them back until they can fly properly, good luck with them, I used to love my finches ;D.

I've just checked out this info on cutthroats and it looks like it probably is a bit of a record Jane. I must admit I found my cock bird singing a lot and having quite a nice voice,so disagree with the site on that one. All things considered my pair have in just under 2 months "met, bonded, mated, nested, laid, hatched and raised 2 babies"!! And people call Cutthroats problematic to breed It also turns out I definately have a pr with the babies.....YAY have doubled my Cutthroats in one go!! Major UPDATE!!!!!!!
The babies are now both flying and doing VERY well!!!
They spent 3 days locked in a breeding cabinet with their parents as the hen baby hadn't gained her wings.
Today they were all let out and doing extremely well....these babies have to be my success of the season...quails aside that is.
I am just amazed that not only did they breed unbonded but they have reared young to young adulthood without the aid of live foods as is stated in a number of sites.
