Ok folks I have just ventured from the aviary and it seems the egg I have under a zebbie finch incubating from my recently lost hen is fertile....I candled it LOL!!!
The problem I am going to have is the rasing of the baby (if it hatches) due to the fact doves and pigeons feed a "milk" for about 2 weeks after hatching.
I am currently trying to find some silly diamond dove that has laid a very late clutch available to do the job for me (mine don't look like laying unfort).
The alternative being what is a good substitute for the milk secretion?
I am happy for this to be cross posted if it assits with the info I am hunting for as if it helps my poor girl live on I couldn't be happier than to put the hard work in.

Hey Seb, do you have a copy of A Guide to Pigeons, Doves and Quail? Birdkeeper publish it: www.birdkeeper.com.au/v2/aguideto8.asp It tells how to make a substitue beak and formulas and everything. Roudybush make a Roudybush Squab Formula that substitutes for the crop milk, here is the link to the page but I can't find where it's for sale in Australia, I'm sure it would be. www.roudybush.com/ I searched to dove chick to find the details.

Hey Zeb, welcome to the wonderful world of birds, I'm guessing you will do a great job raising this bird if it hatches but even if you lose it mate don't worry it's all a huge learning curve in the cycle of life and make sure you keep a record of everything you do, good luck.

Thanks John,
Have to remember I had success with the 2 canary babies not long ago...but they were 2-3 weeks old. Least if it hatches it will have it's eyes open and a smattering of down.

Unfortunately the Cutthroats decided to kick the Zeb out of her nest and than throw the eggs out so there will be no dove hand-raising Not to worry the male has settled down a lot and seems happy so will just hunt down a hen for him for next season.

Yer was disappointing but not to worry..the new season is ahead of us and the aviaries have all been cleaned....the birds moved and the hunt is on for a hen dove. This will be the season of seasons for me....I can feel it. All the birds are coming upto their 1st or 2 nd season (bar 1 or 2) and therefore are all in their prime ages. Princess babies this season I think (pray) and the chooks will have a bumper season too.
