hi guys I was just wondering if anyone could tell me a bit about silver king quails. I recently inherited a pair who have been sitting on eggs. I went out to check on them earlier today, and i found 2 broken egg shells. ..after searching the bottom of the aviary for a good 5 minutes, i found them!!! 2 tiny little yellow fluffies running around after their mum!! ;D I have never had king quails breed for me before, so i was just wanting to know the basics. Like how long do they stay with mum & dad before I can move them? Do they just eat the same as the parents or should i give them something different? (parents are just eating the seed that the 'teils throw out as well as some greens every day. I want to take the babies out of the aviary as soon as I can as there are a few little holes around the bottom that I think they can get out of. But on saying that, I don't want to take them away from mum too early. any help would be great!!! ;D

my "babies" are now about 90% of the size of mum & dad. I went to catch them about a week ago and had to double check to make sure I had the right ones because they look so similar!! Mum is already sitting on another 5 eggs and I'm fairly sure they will be fertile because dad hasnt left her alone for 2 minutes (not even while she is trying to have a drink!!!) I have heaps of people around here wanting to buy them if I have more babies. they must either be popular at the moment or hard to come by? the 2 babies (which I believe both to be hens) are now living in the bottom of my aviary with the 'tiels and seem to be quite happy. I will have to keep an eye out for a boy for them when they are a bit older.

well done Katie. We have a quail that lives around the chook pen and vege garden. I think it got out of the neighbours budgie cage about 1 year ago. I was hoping if I got the aviary finally up I might be able to entice it into maybe Shrekie's cage. How do you sex them??

Tracey, I have no idea if you sex quail all the same way, but with the silver kings that I have, the male has white markings around the bottom of his face and the female doesnt have it. Thats as much as I can tell you about it though as I am fairly new to quail and have never had anything else to do with them at all!! sorry I cant be any more help

HI Gooka I know this is a bit late. We breed lots of them, I have about 38 at varying ages, from one week to 2 months.I always put a box around them. I cut the bottom out then the top but I leave about a 4 " edge right around I place mesh over this so I can see them. The reason I do this is because they are a bit thick when hatched & wander away thus getting cold. I put little water & seed dishes in--- not too deep. They love termites, mealworms etc & I also grate a boiled egg through a sieve with a mix of 4 spoons Farex, egg & biscuit,1 spoon Powdered milk I have the dry ingredients mixed on hand always & mix 6-8 spoonfuls with each egg so it is a moist consistency ( our finches love this mix too ). We let Mum out when they are about 4cms high & are feeding themselves. Another reason we put them in boxes is because older Quail can kill them ( lost 3 of them this way 2 weeks ago). We have them in Silver , Normal & Cinnamon colours. Sexing is the same in all colours the males have the white bib. When introducing a new one to your aviary you need to watch them as they will kill new ones of any age. Good luck with them I notice one of our hens in the Finch aviary has layed 2 eggs & her baby is about 2 weeks old. We have a cinnamon & normal pair on eggs again

I would love some quails but the owls get them , I cannot put them through that kind of trauma.

That was interesting Mrsmacka. When my aviary's are finally "finished" I am thinking of quails too. I saw some in the feedbarn yesterday and had a good look and saw that some had a white bib and thought that might have been the distinguishing difference in them. Is there a difference in size too? As the one hanging around our chooks looks much bigger than the ones I saw yesterday.

Great setup mrsmacka I will do this if mine ever sit long enough to hatch any As everyone here knows my quails lay hundreds of egg but never sit long enough to hatch them.

HI Vankarhi, there is no difference in the size of King Quail just the distinguishing white bib in all 3 colours. The one hanging around your chook pen is probably another type ??

oh ok, maybe it is fully grown and the ones I saw in the feedbarn might be only very young? Or maybe it just looks bigger to me. LOL

Tracey, my babies were about the same size as mum & dad by the time they were fully feathered so maybe the one you have is a different breed? my mother-in-law has brown quails (i have no idea of the breed) but they are about half the size again of the kings that I have. maybe thats what it is??
