Hi, I have a bit of a mystery. My button quails have 9 chicks this morning, which I am quite exicted about. Usually they have one or two. But 4 of the chicks are yellow,a not the dark brown I've come to expect. I don't think the hen has had any chicks before (it's a bit hard to keep track sometimes) but both the hen and cock are the dark brown/grey colour. Does anyone know how they managed to have yellow chicks? Any idea what colour they will be mature? Thanks Yvonne

Congratulations on your 9 chicks Yvonne, from my understanding yellow down on Quail Chicks means they will be White in colour.Althou your pair aren't white they must be split to white (meaning parents have a White partner).. Keep us updated on there progress and if you can any pic's that would be great

I dont have button quail, however, when my king quail breed, the browns start off brown but the silvers start off yellow. I think greg may be right in that the lighter coloured quail start off yellow

yes that is what I thought too......they are going to be a lighter colour..........one of the parents must be a split.

Thanks for the answers everyone. I was thinking they might be silver, but couldn't figure out why since they are both brown.. I tried to take a photo but they are fast - and I'm trying not to disturb them too much I was surprised by how many there were - usually my quails get one or two hatched never this many

**off the topic*** but did the quail incubate the eggs themselves or did pull the eggs ?

Hi Namzz - The quails incubate the eggs. Usually the hens hop off the nest after the first one or two hatch, but this time, the father and the other hen I have in the aviary had all the chicks under them while she continues to sit on the nest..
